HELP! Birthday cake disaster - need help quick!
Today is mom's birthday. I tried making wacky cake (GF) so that DS could eat cake with us.
Total disaster. It was gummy on the bottom, crumbly on top, and completely un-cakelike. I've crumbled it up and added some mint extract (cake is chocolate) thinking I could do something cakeball-ish with it. I don't know what to do with it next, as I have no chocolate to dip the cake into (and I've never tried to dip something in chocolate, and I'm afraid to start today). I'm supposed to go over there in a few minutes to help her prep for T-giving, so I need something to fix this mess NOW! Mom's not a big fan of chocolate or peanut butter.

do you have powdered sugar? You can roll the cake balls in powdered sugar a la donut holes.

Re: HELP! Birthday cake disaster - need help quick!
I have some shredded coconut, and I could crush some almonds. I'm thinking of rolling them in that and toasting it in the oven for a few minutes (I'm not sure the cake was actually done yet, and these balls are the consistency of play-doh).
I do have powdered sugar - I could do some in that for DH who doesn't like coconut or almonds. ---------- Post added at 12:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:47 AM ---------- Well, I now have a plate with small brown balls on it. Some of the balls have powdered sugar on them, the rest have toasted coconut and a touch of powdered sugar. The balls may or may not taste of mint chocolate, and they are definitely not even close to what I think of as the texture of cake. They totally count as yummy dessert, but I don't know that they count as birthday cake, kwim?

cakeballs don't have the consistency of cake. You know if you take a piece of bread and smash it into a ball? That's what it should look like.
---------- Post added at 01:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:28 PM ---------- And if they taste good, you could totally use them for your mom's dessert for her birthday. If it makes you feel better, put a candle in one.

You *tried*. Mom will be satisfied with that. She just didn't want pie for her birthday. Make sure she checks her front door for the flowers I sent.

I'd be thrilled with any dessert I didn't make for my own birthday.

She got the flowers while I was there today, and was totally surprised. The vase was really cool-looking. And you're one up on big brother, who called yesterday and didn't wish her a happy birthday.
