Re: Am I the only one enjoying nettle season?!
It's not nettle season here, but I find this really intriguing! I want to start foraging for more wild foods this summer. We love to pick wild berries (we're very careful) and I've gathered morel mushrooms before. Now I think I'd like to try nettles.
Do you pick it with gloves on to avoid the sting? And does touching dried nettle leaves sting? I drank nettle tea while pregnant but it came in little tea bags. I learned something new from the site you linked to: you can use the juice from a nettle plant to relieve the sting. That info sure is going to prove helpful! |

Is your snow gone, then? We have nettles around here, somewhere. Maybe we should go hunting this weekend. How fun!! Thanks for the recipe. Looks WONDERFUL.

Re: Am I the only one enjoying nettle season?!
Yes, the gloves are to protect from stinging when you're harvesting... I stupidly plunged my hand in the bag of fresh nettles cause I had dropped a knife in there, and my fingers were tingling and weird feeling for almost 24 hours. Apparently if you are more prone to have allergies it stimulates histamine in your body and you react more to the sting than people that aren't prone to allergies who recover from the sting much faster...
I don't know if they still sting after they're dried... I do know that once you heat them they lose their sting. Let me know if you figure that out. ---------- Post added at 07:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:22 PM ---------- What snow? Seriously, this year we are a full month ahead in the growing season, it's been SO mild. We had maybe 3 inches of snow the whole winter... |
