my toddler was exposed to mono. now what?
The subject pretty much says it all. We went to visit some cousins this weeked, and there was a one-year-old who kept stealing Trinity's sippy cup. I did not wash it every time--you know how it is, I didn't even know when she was doing it half the time, and I just give up on that stuff (especially when there are 8 kids around!).
Jimmy got mono in college, and he has never been as healthy as he was before that. There is absolutely no way we can afford for him to get sick again. I don't know if it would have consequences for me being about a month away from my due date. We're not a very kissy family, but we did share bites of a sandwich yesterday. Dr. Sears' site didn't have a section on mono--I'm just trying to figure out where to look to find out what I need to do. I know it can take a while to show up. It just seems like it's one thing to try not to worry about after another this pregnancy! Any info/suggestions?

Kind of confused - are you concerned that your dh will get it, or Trinity, or you? or all three?
I wish I had some advice - I do know I had mono in college (I promise I did not give it to Jimmy, ha ha) and I think we make too light of it in general; people call it the kissing disease and all that. But I know I have never quite been the same since, either. for your family! Did you ask your ped? |

Re: my toddler was exposed to mono. now what?
I was told that mono acts very different in a child. Like it wont be as big of deal in a child. My sister had mono at age 7. It lasted a week, where as in a teenager it usually last 4-6 weeks.
Just load up on things to build your childs immune system, like do you have access to a dairy farm? Colostrum really works as an immune system booster. We always have it in our house frozen in the freezer, in case someone gets sick, or we are knoingly ecposed to illness, or if somone is comming down with something. Then its time to break it out. It just tastes like rich and super creamy milk. I think you may be able to get it in a powdered form. But fresh is always best! |

Bovine colostrum is a great immunity booster. It is recommended for anyone trying to boost or sustain immunity. I used to buy it to drink but all raw milk products here in CA recently got recalled. As soon as it comes back I'll get it fresh again. Kal makes it in tablet form. It's chewable and natural vanilla flavored for the one a day or Kiwi and Straberry flavored for the two a day. I am not familiar personally with any other brands.

That is so cool. I have never heard of it - we may have it at HFS here...I think I saw it once or twice in tablet form, in the refrigerated section. Very interesting!

Re: my toddler was exposed to mono. now what?
I'm concerned about all of it--that she'd get sick, and then pass it on to either of us. It's good to hear it's not that bad in kids. I'd hate to see her as sick as Jimmy was.
Thanks healthymomof3 for the links. I'm wondering if the fact that she's probably been exposed to it at some point from Jimmy (or me--I'm sure he shared it w. me at some point even though I never got sick) will keep her from actually getting sick, or infecting either of us. I guess we'll see around the baby's due date. Such fun! Jimmy's been really careful about spreading germs, but I haven't been. (Who knew I shared a spoon so often with my toddler!?) I'm wondering if the fact that she nurses often makes a difference in whether she could give it to me outright--I've clearly been exposed to her saliva! Anyway, thanks. That's interesting stuff about the bovine colostrum. I probably won't try to get any, since she's getting human colostrum at the moment. But good to know!
