Tmj and orthodontia? Yay? Or nay?
I'd love to hear thoughts on this. I'm aware there are varying opinions. My dd's specific issues are bite related and lately I'm wondering abt this as an option. We've been told to proceed cautiously that she does need braces. I'm just unsure abt proceeding because she has had such a difficult time w her jaw.
Not sure what to ask so just hoping for thoughts opinions and personal experiences! Thanks

Re: Tmj and orthodontia? Yay? Or nay?
For me personally, I am absolutely convinced that orthodontia caused my tmj. My jaw was brought forward (via rubber bands), and my palate was widened (via a spacer). My entire adult life I've had tmj headaches. I won't do the same to my kids. I may get braces for them to straighten teeth out, but I won't mess with their jaw position. Just my opinion though.

Re: Tmj and orthodontia? Yay? Or nay?
I wonder if you could find a TMJ therapist. I once did TMJ therapy where he worked on adjusting my bite by slightly filing spots on my teeth to adjust my bite. It was more helpful than anything I've done, although nothing has ever completely taken my headaches and tension away. TMJ therapists are hard to find. I don't think there are many of them. I lived in Orange County, CA at the time, and could tell you who I saw, but I don't think you live in that part of the country.
Might try googling to see if you're near one though!

Did your do tens therapy or manual adjustment. She's had internal and external manual adjustment. Her pain isn't horrible but not healed either and flares up.

Re: Tmj and orthodontia? Yay? Or nay?
I live nowhere near you, but we chose an ortho who specializes in TMJ correction through orthodontia.
Eta: none of us had TMJ prior to becoming patients, the thought was that a specialist would ensure proper alignment do TMJ doesn't occur in the future.

Re: Tmj and orthodontia? Yay? Or nay?
I have very straight teeth but a gap between the middle. Was offered *free* braces from new dentist. Wore them 15? months. Short. Some TMJ since. This is a decision to pray about until you have peace!

I don't remember. It was almost 20 years ago!
