A stuffed felt bird ornament and crocheting snowflakes
I feel like I've seen a pattern for one on a blog or something, but my googling now is to no avail. The body was 3 pieces- 2 for the back and one for the belly. The one I saw was a robin, so the 2 back pieces were gray/brown and the bottom one was orange. Anyone know what I mean? Or know how to make something like this? I'm looking for a 3d stuffed bird, and not cartoony- more realistic, though I realize a homemade stuffed bird is never going to be totally realistic.
Also I'd like to crochet some snowflake ornaments. How hard would that be? I've never crocheted in my life but I do know how to knit rectangles (dishcloths, scarves, etc) and hats on a knitting loom, though I always have to look at instructions for casting on and off. How do you learn to crochet?

Re: A stuffed felt bird ornament and crocheting snowflakes
If you're a visual learner you could search youtube for videos on how to crochet. I think LionBrand website has several free snowflake patterns.
Honestly, snowflakes are probably at least an intermediate skill because they're lacy which means more complicated stitches. That doesn't mean a beginner can't do them. Some beginners are great at complicated stitches because they don't know enough to be afraid of them and don't overthink the instructions. You strike me as one of those people. |

Re: A stuffed felt bird ornament and crocheting snowflakes
So what's the crocheting equivalent of knitting a dishcloth? What do people learning to crochet start with?
---------- Post added at 09:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:05 PM ---------- Okay, I just watched a youtube video- that looks really easy, but then if you're good at something you can always make it look easy. Should I start with thread or yarn?

Re: A stuffed felt bird ornament and crocheting snowflakes
When I teach someone to crochet I first have them make chains. Over and over, long, short, and then frog it out and start over.
Then I teach them the next step and have them do that over and over because the first row is usually the one that trips up everyone. After that, I have them make coasters because they're small and square. If they don't want to do that, then a scarf or a dishcloth is fine. Wash cloths are basically large coasters and great for under plants as well as other practical uses. ---------- Post added at 10:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:10 PM ---------- Quote:
Wash cloths are best made out of cotton, but cotton doesn't stretch and can be tough to learn with. |

I definitely agree with this. It taught me to keep my stitches even without being too tight, though... After trying to force the hook through too-small spaces for a while, you start to learn.
I've made tons of scarves, coasters and pot holders. It's only been about two years since I started branching out and doing baby blankets with some more complicated stitches. I really need to look for instructions for some cool stitches on youtube.........

Would this be the bird you're looking for?
