She didn't suggest you didn't parent him before. She only said that active parenting is a better overall approach to danger. Clearly active parenting was keeping your child from getting run over so it was *working*. You chose to spank him and that stopped his discovery attempts, but that doesn't mean it was an ideal choice and doesn't mean it is something to be defended.

I didn't think either MOS or Janice were "defending" their actions. They were just (and MOS specifically said this) answering the question which was "Please help me understand why someone would think this is OK?"

I read their responses as "because often it works - I did it and it worked. Not proud of it, and wouldn't choose to do it again, but that is the reasoning that many parents use"
