Looking for a US flag dessert
My DH is getting his US citizenship and I want to make him a US flag dessert! I don't want something cake-like. I was looking for something like cheesecake but rectangle-shaped (not round in a springform pan). I remember seeing something like that years ago, but I can't find the recipe. It was made w/blueberries symbolizing the stars and strawberries for the stripes on top of a whipped cream spread.
Also prefer a recipe "from scratch," rather than using packaged ingredients. Not too picky, eh? |

Re: Looking for a US flag dessert
i guess you could do just about any dessert, and top it with whipped cream and berries/strawberries in a flag design. I think on the ones I've seen, they slice the strawberries and lay them end to end to make the stripes. For the "stars" just leave spaces between some of the blueberries to let the whipped cream show through.
Look what popped up on the main page of allrecipes just now... http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Strawbe...on/Detail.aspx What a coincidence! It appears not to be cake-based, and is pretty "from scratch" (condensed milk, gelatin, fruit, etc.) I have always loved the dessert that has pretzels as a crust, strawberries with strawberry jello, and I *think* it has cream cheese. If your family likes sweet&salty stuff, they might like this. The cream cheese makes it similar to cheesecake. It's wierd, but good. here is a link to one on allrecipes: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Strawbe...ie/Detail.aspx I personally prefer home-made whipped cream. Not super healthy because of the high fat, but if you just use a thin layer, it's not *too* bad. It's also more natural than cool whip or rediwhip or something similar. I just get the heavy whipping cream, add some powdered sugar to the level of sweet that I want, and beat it with a handheld mixer/beater thingy. It is SOOOOO yummy!!

Re: Looking for a US flag dessert
We did this with cake once and jell-o another time. If you don't want a cake base, maybe you could just try a torte or graham cracker crust and use the berries as the filling.

Re: Looking for a US flag dessert
I've had a cheesecake desert before that was rectangle and decorated with a whipped topping, strawberries and blueberries. It was really yummy. Wish I knew a link to send you to.
Another option is to do fruit cups. Use strawberries, blueberries, and a grapefruit. Slice up your fruit, add them to fancy glasses, and cover in sparkling juice (grape/apple). It's really refreshing and delicious and a perfect fourth of July treat. |

Re: Looking for a US flag dessert
I would do a pavlova with cream or yoghurt topping and then the blueberries and either strawberries or raspberries.
