Smartphone without LTE capability?

I'm finally about to enter smartphone ownership and have found a great phone and plan, but I need to decide if I *need* to have LTE capability.

So, is it absolutely necessary? If I have an otherwise awesomely rated and recommended smartphone, will the lack of LTE cause a problem in the near future (within a year)?

Probably won't be an issue at all, unless you plan to use your phone overseas. Even then it might not be an issue.

I just got my first phone with LTE, only because my old phone died so I upgraded. Dh is still using a phone with 3G. No issues at all.

I agree with pp. Unless you plan to travel abroad, you should be fine. The main reason why dh and I got phones with LTE is because he really cares about download and connection speeds. In short, we want a phone that can be as good as or better than a laptop while we are away from home. Also when we upgrade phones, he often send his old phones to family abroad so all they have to do is get an appropriate SIM card and not have to spend a ton of money on a smart phone.
