anti-Dobson page; very interesting
This may be posted here somewhere or maybe you already know about it But I just stumbled across it today and thought it deserved to be posted for those who may have not seen it. It is a chart comparing Dobson's teachings to the advice of experts in the fields of domestic violence and child-sexual-abuse prevention.
I never thought Dobson was "That bad" even though i know his confrontational views are But this really brings out some of his worst points... in case anyone ever needs ammunition, or needs to know how what he says contradicts current knowledge about emotional and physical abuse. http://nospank.net/perlin2.htm

wow, that makes me sad I use to really like Dobson. Who would have known some of his stuff sounds so abusive. Taken out of context, that could be very scary.

Well this is an instance where I still like Dobson but I don't agree with him on his disipline stance.

Re: anti-Dobson page; very interesting
I knew that Dobson had some issues when I heard him on a Morning Radio program and he and his guest advocated physically sitting on your strong willed child to get them under your control.
As a former "strong willed" child I can attest that Dobson's tactics do nothing but create anger, resentment, and hostility and I'm still dealing with that anger today. |

Re: anti-Dobson page; very interesting
I've been known to sit on Doug. Of course, I don't classify him as strong willed. He's classfied as having a mood disorder, and on pyschotrophic drugs for it.
The strange thing to me is that Focus on Your Child (parenting division of FOTF) actually has some great info. It's Dobson himself that seems to be generating the bulk of this garbage. At times, they even contradict each other. |

Re: anti-Dobson page; very interesting
The worst "Dobson advice" I think I ever heard was on the radio on a call-in parenting program. A mother called in about a problem she was having getting her 6 year old daughter to wear dresses to church. The little girl had been sexually abused by a neighbor or friend--I forget who, not really important. Anyway, she clearly identified that the problem with dresses started when the abuse occurred. "But it was a year ago!"
Dobson's advice to the mother was to force the issue, and if the girl refused to wear dresses, it was something she should be spanked for. I have to wonder if he would have the same attitude with a woman who was raped, and worked for an employer that required female employees to wear dresses--would he tell the employer to enforce disciplinary action on the woman, or would he encourage the employer to have sympathy for the woman's feeling of vulnerability? Re: anti-Dobson page; very interesting
Wow! I didn't know all this.
I've always loved listening to Focus on the Family, and though I know they do various parenting books, it never occured to me to get any of them. Didn't have a clue there were things like that in them. |
