Default "Only Love Today"

I saw this article on Facebook today and it really spoke to me. I think it is such an important part of gentle parenting to first "parent" ourselves in the way that we wish to parent our children. I find when I'm kinder and show more grace to myself that it extends to my children and those around me. Truly it is putting that verse from Mark 12:31 to "love your neighbor as yourself" into action. We forget sometimes that we have to bask in the love and grace offered to us by our gracious Father and in turn love and be gracious to ourselves first. And then out of that flows the love, grace, and kindness to others. So a challenge for me is that on those days I'm finding myself not treating others, including my children, as I would like, I will take a minute to stop and remind myself to extend only love today. Will you join me? How can we help each other in this?

Oh how I needed this reminder today. It’s been a hard spring and while I do well loving my own kids I have been having a hard time being the teacher I want to be when a I am at work. I will be kind to myself and as an extension transfer that kindness to my classroom.

oh wow! Did that ever hit home to me! I am 100% the meanest bully ever to myself. I struggle with negative self talk. And in turn I struggle with the same things that author did with my teens. I am way too quick to criticize, correct, and therefore discourage.

I will absolutely take you up on this challenge!

It surprises me how I can say things to myself that I wouldn't be caught dead saying to anyone else. And yet even though I wouldn't want to say those things to someone else, the negativity and criticalness do come out to other people. My counselor at one point had me write down some of those negative tapes that run in my head and then counter them with a phrase I'd rather say to myself. That was a hugely helpful exercise.

I posted this in another thread but it fits here, too.

Quote:
The acceptance of oneself is the essence of the whole moral problem and the epitome of a whole outlook on life. That I feed the hungry, that I forgive an insult, that I love my enemy in the name of Christ -- all these are undoubtedly great virtues. What I do unto the least of my brethren, that I do unto Christ. But what if I should discover that the least among them all, the poorest of all the beggars, the most impudent of all the offenders, the very enemy himself -- that these are within me, and that I myself stand in need of the alms of my own kindness -- that I myself am the enemy who must be loved -- what then?

I love that quote. I'm glad you shared it here. It is definitely thought-provoking.

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today because I had a bad dream. You know those dreams that hit too close to home sometimes? I so wanted to snap at people this morning. But then I remembered this article. Only love today. Love and kindness for myself to take a couple minutes to comfort myself and process the dream which in turn helped me not to snap at my people. One situation at a time, one day at a time, and love and kindness will spread. Do any of you have any examples yet on how you are putting this into practice that would encourage us?

The author of the article has a book by the same title: Only Love Today. You might enjoy that, too.

want a prime example about the truth of the existence spiritual warfare?

Today, just as I'm attempting to implement this, my 16 yo dd chose today to attempt to assert herself and push all of our boundaries.

So I'm also glad this popped up as a reminder to me. Deep breaths.

Oh man. Y the time I got home Friday from work I was running on fumes and did not give all the love to myself or my kids that any of us deserved. I did however sleep and try it again on Saturday which was so needed as my oldest left her SAT voucher at home resulting in not being able to take the test. I didn’t respond with the anger I wanted to. I leaned in and said “I’m sorry. That is really hard.” Instead
