Anyone remember when dh wanted a fish tank?
Well, he and ds now each have one! A 20 gallon salt water tank in ds' room and a 55 gallon fresh water tank in the living room.
I have nothing to do with them. I am pleasantly surprised that they take good care of them. The lids could be cleaner but the rest is fine. It's been over a year now. Now, dh wants to convert the living room tank to salt water or get another tank to be a salt water tank! I don't really want another tank, but said I'd consider it if he let me get another cat. I have one cat and he's super affectionate but does not ever lay in our laps. DS and I want a lap cat. But seriously, it would be wiser to wait until our credit card debt is paid off. Which may be 2 years. I guess he loves fish like I love cats and dogs. But I only have one of each!

I am glad you have a way to make it work. Yes, I would want to wait until credit cards are paid before any more fluffy (or slimy) expenditures!

Wow. That's cool. Id love a salt water tank but Ive heard they are expensive to maintain and a fish in general are a lot of work. I wish my DH wanted one enough to be willing to do the work.

Re: Anyone remember when dh wanted a fish tank?
That is some serious work if he plans to add another tank as he already has two big ones. (I have a 10 gallon and a 20 gallon freshwater tropical).
My advice to your husband would be to wait... it has only been a year and sometimes interest and desire for continuing the maintenance wanes after awhile. I find myself now sometimes not wanting to put in the full effort but fish aren't something you can shirk on. |

Re: Anyone remember when dh wanted a fish tank?
It has not been expensive to maintain at all.
Dh pointed out that my cat and dog may be free up front but their monthly expense together is about $50-60. The fish are expensive up front but their monthly expense is maybe $5. Since he found a good fish store and buys large bottles of chemicals and food that last several months. I need to tell him we can revisit another tank at the end of 2015. I just don't know about a 3rd tank, seems silly. Or maybe sell the 20 gallon and get another 55 gallon. And another cat (that is snuggly) will be fun. Thanks for reminding me that yes, we should pay off debt first!

Re: Anyone remember when dh wanted a fish tank?
I'm glad you have it worked out. He's right about the pet costs, but fish are ten times more work than cats or dogs. I have had a lot of different pets over the years and am always surprised at how little work dogs and cats are compared to the others.

Re: Anyone remember when dh wanted a fish tank?
I agree, but it depends what you love. DH and ds love the fish so they don't consider them work. I love the cat and dog so I don't consider them work.
