our library system is annoying!

I hate it when I forget to check and then have 10 things due yesterday and it won't let me renew them!

The system does that if the fine is over $5 or if it is over a certain number of books.

I think that's pretty standard, but yes, annoying I suppose.

I have the advantage of having a daughter working at our library, so I just give her money to 'pay down my debt to society

' once she gets to work and then renew.

Ours is worse. It is a state wide system. So, we never know where the books are coming from. We never know when or if they will get here. Then they have random due dates depending on the place they came from.

This is the first time in my life where I haven't used the library.

And I forgot to get the books to take them after I took ds1 to school.

They are in dd1's room and she was asleep last night and I didn't want to wake her getting books out of the bin in her room.

Now I'll owe something like $5! Argh!!

In dd's system (not saying it's the same with all of them, but....), all fines go towards buying new materials, if that helps give you any comfort.

Yes, I figure I am helping fund the library. Still way cheaper than buying all these books.

The only reason I knew this is because she was bothered by a patron who assumed the librarians personally pocketed the fines

. I thought the fines went to a general fund, but she says they are very specifically designated because other functions are government budgeted issues.

I once had a library that was so good about renewing things for me, as long as there were no holds on my items. Not this one.

Ours will override the restriction to renew them by phone in situations like that, but it is frustrating. And you have to call the nice library where the experienced librarians will do that without thinking anything of it...some of the smaller branches or newer staff will indeed just tell you that you're over the limit so that's why you can't renew. I never seem to notice mine during business hours, so it's always a mess of fines when I get locked out of the online system.

In Washington State, the libraries were funded according to circulation. So, they loved us

. Except the City library which actually tried to send me to collections over a fine.

I have to pay $100/year to use our library, because we live over the county line by a hair, and they are very "fine happy". Even if it was their mistake, they will not take fines off of your account. I had tried to renew online, and thought it went through, but apparently it didn't

And it was for a DVD, which they fine at $1.00/day. I asked them to consider removing it, but since they forgave a fine from 5 years ago, they said they couldn't. One time per account...even it was years ago. Yeah, I love my local library....
