A child must learn quickly there are consequences to disobedience. A sting on the hand reaching for a knife is one of those consequences quickly learned. I made a little switch out of a glue stick cut long ways into quarters. One glue stick can yield 4, foot long switches when cut properly with a razor or box cutter. The little sticks are flexible, don't leave any marks, and provide just the right amount of sting to get a reaction from the child.

Technically, Ezzo moms suggest glue sticks, and Pearl moms suggest plumbing pipes. :/

The glue sticks are flexible, so you kind of use it like a rubberband, i think. Holding one end in your hand and pulling the other end back in an arc and then letting go so it 'flicks' and stings when it hits the child's skin. It's not the same hitting action as a wooden spoon. And i know people who do Ezzo who use them .

ETA: By 'gluestick' we mean the long, thin, milky white ones you put in hot glue guns and buy at craft stores. Not the short Elmer's Glue sticks kids use smear glue on construction paper.

Well, here's another WOW! Bliss, I'm so glad you had the courage to ask them.

If the "biblical spankers" really want to be bliblical, then what's with the glue stick? I believe those were invented in the 20th century and would not be confused with a rod.

I'm sorry I have never heard of anyone spanking children with glue sticks. Where did you hear that Christians do it???

I have only every heard the use of glue sticks or plumbing line or those little leather strap "spankers" in Christian circles. And every time one is mentioned, it's pointed out how it doesn't leave a mark and that's the reason for using that particular item. I have personally never heard those things discussed by non-Christians (not that non-Christians don't use them, just that Christians are really the only people *I* ever hear discuss spanking in depth - how to do it, with what, for what offenses, not in public, etc).

I, in shock, had told a friend about this....she said, "Hmmmmm, I don't see how that is much different than a switch. "B" (her teenage daughter), her school is allowed to spank her. If they need to spank her, they will call me at home and either they can do it, or I can come in and do it." I said, "What if you don't agree with the spanking?" She said, "I got spanked at school and it never hurt me. I got spanked one time for singing a country song at school (Christian school)." I said, "Even IF I spanked, it would NEVER be ok for the school to spank my kid and it would NEVER, EVER, EVER be ok for them to spank for singing a country song!!!! Just tell them to stop!" She said, "Oh, if they hadn't spanked me I would have just done it again. I would have said, "No biggie, they will just tell me to stop again. The boys at our school used to do things on purpose to get spanked because our principal was a young woman about 22-23 yrs old and she is the one that spanked us, so they would do stuff just to get her to spank them." the school never caught on to what the boys were doing, because they were just spanking "as the Bible says" and not paying attention to what was REALLY going on. Nice, huh?

It's like magic or something, they don't leave a single bruise, but it hurts like a [non-repeatable] and it can tear into the muscle and *stuff*." Another guy at this point asks me why I want to know, "Your man getting rough on you or something?" and laughs - I said no, I knew of people that spanked their kids with them, and that whole group of nine or ten hard-core tattooed thugs who had been laughing and talking while this was going on, went dead silent. I got a whole round of these: and finally one said, "If my baby's mama ever took a glue stick to him, she would never see him again. That is *messed* up."

Pretty interesting? Perhaps we should enlighten the "glue-stick spankers" that they are using a gang form of abuse and torture - wouldn't that be "conforming to the world"? Interesting that even these boys see something inherently wrong in hitting a child with one.

Nothing original to say here, just.....You know, there is something about those really tough guys some times. They do see more clearly, it looks like, than some of the "parenting gurus" out there......

I have to tell you, that I have wondered about this very thing. Because I remember a doctor saying, many years ago, that when you have bruises/marks that show, it is less painful than if they don't. When the marks are on the inside, is where the really terrible pain is.... Poor little kids.....

DH has never seen glue sticks like those used for "discipline" purposes.


We were at the store tonight, and I showed him. He was completely sickened that those would be used to hit children.

DH currently identifies himself as agnostic. A major reason? People calling themselves followers of God while engaging in acts that are damaging to their fellow humans. This type of parenting stuff makes me seriously angry.
