Default Dehydration (I went to the ER)

I passed out at a work meeting yesterday. I went to the ER. We lost our insurance last month when my husband lost his job. I got a job and he has a temp job. I’m doing stocking from 2-11pm. I really like the job. But, it means I’m lifting and walking around 4 miles. I’ve been drinking water but apparently not enough. I was dropping ketones so he thinks I’m not getting calories. My glucose was a little high but not terribly even though my co-workers/manager gave me oj when I came to.

I was just curious if anyon has thoughts or unique suggestions?

I get two 15 breaks. I get a full hour for lunch.

My plan is to get more produce in my body and less bread items. Keep a Powerade or coconut water with me at all times. Eat something like a Cheesestick and a cliff bar at my snacks. Take my full lunch sitting down. I’ve been getting food and then going back, so my lunch is only 30 of me sitting.

At home, I will be drinking more, no coffee or tea, eating more, getting way more sleep.

I got an EKG, CT and X-rays and full blood labs. Everything looked pretty good.

Gatorade is better than Powerade because Powerade has HFCS. There is also a "cherry frost" or something Gatorade that is food dye free.

Nuts with sea salt. Perhaps a homemade electrolyte drink or even adrenal cocktail (it was mentioned in a thread recently).

I don't have many suggestions But I can pray

Oh that’s good to know. I was sucking Powerade down yesterday and trying to ignore the corn syrup.

Nuts would be good. I can keep those in my locker, too. Anything I can keep in my locker would be nice. I grew up in a salt free household. I don’t even usually salt food. I know we need it though.

It sounds as if you really need the salt. If you can get some Real Salt (it's the multicolored pink sea salt), that would be great. I don't remember it being expensive. Here are some on-line options, but I remember seeing it in regular grocery stores.

The coconut water would be best option for electrolytes and also making sure you add sea salt to your foods. I think also intentionally drinking water on the hour - hoping you can drink water at your desk?

Default Re: Dehydration (I went to the ER)

One of my kids has a condition that manifests that way, called POTS. The larger umbrella term is called dysautonomia. Bananacake pretty much already summed up what her doctors advise. Increase fluids and salt. There are tons of electrolyte drinks out there to choose from that aren't Gatorade or Powerade. My favorite kind is called Dr. Price's. It is sweetened with stevia. Some flavors of Nuun tablets also are, but they don't taste as good. The Emergen-C brand now also has an electrolyte drink mix available called Hydration Plus (we get it at Sam's Club). Also, you can put a little bit of the Himalayan pink salt in your drinking water.

If this ends up being a longer term thing for you, and it doesn't get better with trying those things, it may be a good idea to be evaluated by a cardiologist. There are also meds that can be prescribed to help your body to retain fluids to help with keeping you hydrated. Thankfully, many people do well on the electrolyte drinks and the salt.

My friend brought me stuff from food storage and one of the items is a big bag of pink salt!

I always have a cart with me and can keep a drink with me. I will look for the emergenc.

I did have my heart looked at and it said it looked good. But, I was told I need to follow up and if it happens again to get back to the ER.

What is POTS?

POTS is short for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. People can have it, despite having an EKG that looks normal (every single EKG my daughter has ever had have come back normal). A nurse practitioner actually diagnosed my daughter, but we did follow up with a cardiologist to confirm.

These websites have some info on POTS.
