Re: tell me your "food rules" for the kids
Lol, DD LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOVES bread but if she's wanting "real food" because she's hungry and the only thing she has the option for is bread, it's suddenly less desirable. Now, if it was a piece of crusty garlic bread instead of sandwich bread........she'd be thrilled.

Re: tell me your "food rules" for the kids
I have two children. Theo will try everything at least once. Libby not so much. You'd have to pin her down and force it down her.
I put everything on her plate that's on other people's plates. She doesn't have to eat it but it has to be there. Ever so rarely, she'll add a new food to her "can eats" They've both been raised the same. Extended breastfed, baby led weaning. Just different personalities. [drives me crazy ] |

Re: tell me your "food rules" for the kids
Yes, some kids are adventurous eaters, some are not. I have 3 pretty adventurous eaters and 1 legitimate gourmand. She will not eat plain/simple foods. She will eat expensive, rare, exotic foods that require 3 days to prepare. She will try anything she's never seen before. At a restaurant she always orders the most exotic & expensive item on the menu.
I ate lots and lots of spicy foods from many cultures while pregnant and nursing and I used to love to cook back when I had time to breathe so I guess I bred it into her. |

Re: tell me your "food rules" for the kids
Honestly? There are very little rules here. I think having a minimum bite amount, or clean plate, or try it even if I know you hate it just sets up kids for future food issues. Anything from eating disorders to just as simple as never wanting to eat something as an adult because mom always made me eat it even if I hated it. My mom has a few dishes like that.
Basically the only rules are I'll make breakfast, lunch, dinner. I'll do my very best to make sure it's not something someone hates. Because that just stinks. Ask me before helping yourself to snacks so I can help you make a good decision/plan well on timing of meals, etc. I don't buy what I won't let them eat. Also, you cannot just sit and eat all of something in a sitting. Portion control is important for our health....and budget. I will say no to snacks if it's way too close to another meal. Meal specific, I really just try and help them make good food choices instead if requiring x, y, z. We talk a lot about why certain foods are important and what balancing our intake looks like. For example: Tonight we did grilled chicken breasts, corn on the cob, baked potato and I made a macaroni salad. Dd ate all her Mac salad first and asked for more. She's my carb lover. She still had most of her potatoes and chicken left. I told her that I wasn't too concerned about the potato, but she really needed more protein before more carbs so if she had her chicken and was still hungry, she could have more. It's more of a respectful dialogue here than a "this is the rule, too bad, so sad." It's worked well.
