Ok I need more details on a vegetable cobbler because clearly i do not know what you would call a cobbler.

Hmm, maybe I’m using the word incorrectly? I’d call a cobbler something with a scone topping (as opposed to pastry, which would be a pie). In this case it’s cheesy scones, though you could have sweet ones and make a fruit cobbler!

Oh, that was to answer knitlove’s question. I thought I’d quoted but obviously not!

That is what I was assuming but I have neaver interacted with anything savory being called a cobbler.

This sounds very similar to a dumpling dish. But I assume that dumplings to you would have a very different meaning.

Is this cobbler dough cooked in the oven or steamed in a pot?

We do have dumplings, but they would be more soft and doughy I suppose, and probably would be steamed. With the cobbler, I rolled the dough out (fairly thickly though) and cut it with cookie cutters, and the whole thing went in the oven, so they were brown with a bit of a crust on top (I’d also put cheese on top, as well as putting some in the dough). Does that make sense? Sometimes we are definitely divided by our common language

My friends around here would probably call that dumplings. But depending on where you are in the country, dumplings differ. Where I grew up, dumplings went on top and were steamed. Other places I've lived, they've been rolled thin and "dumped" in the stew or soup. Other places, they're really just biscuits baked on top. But gnocchi are called dumplings, too. And don't forget the filled varieties....

When I hear "cobbler" I usually think a cake layer over fruit. (Not necessarily biscuit or scone texture. Definitely not cut and shaped.)

It’s so interesting how we use words in similar but different ways! There are different regional variations here - tea instead of dinner confuses me every time! (I don’t live now where I grew up). And there are so many different words for a bread roll...

What did you end up doing? I would have gone in and gotten bok choy or something. Surely they weren't all of all kinds of cabbage. Bagged and shredded versus whole, you know?

I made collard greens the other day when they were out of brussel sprouts.

Tonight was stir fry and I got it all cooked before I remembered to cook rice!

I ended up making a sort of stir fry with the sausage, zucchini, carrots, frozen broccoli and cauliflower, canned water chestnuts. and green onions. It was pretty good, but not as good egg roll in a bowl with cabbage. I order my groceries for pick up because of Covid and so if they are out of something I try to make do without it rather than going into the store for a substitute.

Yeah, I get not wanting to go in the store. I feel like I'm in a bubble sometimes and forget I'm living in a pandemic.

I just ordered a cabbage in my grocery pickup to make cabbage sausage soup tonight. We're going to have sub sandwiches and soup (although I'll probably be the only one to eat the soup)
