oil free question
Last week I decided to do the McDougall diet plan. I'm excited. I've been vegetarian for almost three years and part of that was vegan but I have fallen back into eating dairy and want to get off it. I'm having some weight and health issues so a friend of mine asked if I wanted to do this with her and I'm all for it.
The hardest part right now is giving up my Earth Balance! I love the stuff, on toast, cornbread, in recipes. One in particular is my vegan challah bread recipe. It calls for 3 TBSP of EB. Is there anything I can replace it with or find a new recipe? When I gave up dairy a couple years ago the hardest thing to give up was the cheese...this time around it's the Earth Balance! Anyone else follow McDougall?

Re: oil free question
Someone commented on this recipe that they use coconut milk instead of oil. I don't know if that would be something that would work for you? http://www.theppk.com/2013/09/vegan-challah/
I've never tried McDougall's diet plan, but I think I might know someone who is more familiar with it. I'll give her a poke. That's great you are wanting to give up dairy! We really like Earth Balance in our family. I can see how that would be hard to give up. You're giving it up due to it being oil, right, since EB is non-dairy? I just wanted to make sure. Have you already seen this website? I bet there are some good recipes there: http://fatfreevegan.com/ How are you doing?

Re: oil free question
I'ts been a couple months now and I'm not missing the EB as much. I only gave it up to try the McDougall plan which calls for no oil. Otherwise I'd still be putting it on everything. lol
I wish I'd never fallen off the wagon in regards to dairy. My desire has always been to be vegan for all kinds of reasons and for health not even being on the top. But it was so hard to break away from how I was raised. This time I'm 3 years out being vegetarian and feeling confident in my choices and it's good. Overall I really love eating whole foods plant based. It's a challenge at times for sure. I never realized that oil is in EVERYTHING! But I feel good. I'll have to try that challah recipe with the coconut milk. I haven't made challah since I cut out oil. We all miss it. I was just feeling overwhelmed converting recipes and trying to figure everything out so I haven't tackled that one yet. Maybe this week I will.

Re: oil free question
Leaving out the Earth balance just changes the texture a smidge. Coconut milk from a can works nicely in baked goods. I use Happy Herbivore baking recipes and she use applesauce a lot. I thought it sounded horrid. But, her drop biscuits are awesome. Plus, applesauce is a lot less expensive then Earth Balance.
