Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
I was wondering if i could replace zote with castille soap in the laundry soap posted a while back. also doing some digging on homemade laundry soap i found a gel soap i thought you ladies would be interested in. I haven't tried it yet but i think i'm going to. It's from http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/laundrysoap.htm
the recipe is:1/3 bar fels naptha or other type of soap 1/2 cup washing soda 1/2 cup borax a 2 gallon bucket and your choice of EO (optional) grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups of water and heat it until it melts. Add the washing soda and borax and stir until it is dissolved. remove from heat. pour 4 cups of hot water to bucket. now add your soap mixture and stir. now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let set for about 24 hours and it will gel. use 1/2 cup per load Will not be a solid gel but a watery gel. and it is a low sudsy soap. |

Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
I've just read through all 10 pages of this and I would like to know:
* The zote or fels naphta soap - are these laundry soap bars? I can't get either here, but there is a brand of laundry soap that comes in a bar I can try to use that. * Given what hydrogen peroxide does to hair, why doesn't it bleach everything else in sight? And if I remember correctly, it gets absorbed by the skin and can cause all sorts of problems, so I would never have thought this would be safe to use around the house. Am I wrong about this? |

I do know that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a free radical, which means it could potentially damage skin I would think. I've never had it affect my hair at all (and trust me, when I was younger I tried). |

Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
that one sounds like something we will get lots of use of, we just got started gardening, some herbs, tomatoes and pepers, but I know with our very expensive groseries bills (organic) we will be doing more and more gardening, I'm so exited about that! I needed a recipe for unwanted bugs and we have lots of ants in our back yard, my boy is allergic.

Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
I'm pretty sure I looked at every recipe in this thread and didn't find this:
Anyone have a recipe for a fruit/veggie wash? I buy one from my HFS but it's expensive and doesn't last me very long with all the produce I buy.

Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
I'm confused about the essential oils. Are they all bad to use when pregnant, or just the lavender?

http://www.oprah.com/recipe/food/hea...20080422_spray Anna and Lulu, I think it's peppermint that is best to avoid in large quantities while pregnant...and essential oils are concentrated forms of a substance so a little can be a lot, iykwim. I am not sure why, though. Anyone?? |

Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
Does anyone make their own dishwashing soap for handwashing?
Thought I'd share what I do: Vinegar and water for everything...it's even very good for cleaning doggie nono or muddy spots on the carpet I make my own detergent with either Zote or Fels Naptha (I think I like the FN best), borax, washing soda and a scoop of OxyClean, vinegar in the rinse and maybe a sprinkle of baking soda if the load is funky. Sometimes I put in a squirt of my bottle of Arm and Hammer liquid to make the laundry smell good since ds likes a nice smell and EOs are outrageously expensive |

Re: Natural Cleaning Recipes
I use straight baking soda for most of my cleaning and rinse with 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar. It works great on my flat top stove too. I use a "helloise ball" mesh scrubby thing to clean with. So I scrub with baking soda, then wipe the majority off with a wet cloth and then spray with the vinegar rinse and dry with a washcloth or microfiber. For floors I just use the vinegar spray and a microfiber cloth on my old swiffer wet jet thing. For caked on places I rub quickly with a a little baking soda.
