Default what's your winter thermostat setting?

My husband gives me a hard time sometimes because I turn the heat up more than he wants. We've had years without heat so I'm enjoying being able to be more comfortable this year! We were joking about what the normal is for our friends, and I only have like one friend IRL and she keeps her house in the upper 70s, so I was curious. How do you keep your house in the winter? I put it up to 62 during the day, and 58 at night. I think he'd like it best to be at 58 during the day (or off, sometimes he turns it off at night). We live in Georgia so the winters are very mild, we also have an old drafty house with two non-working fireplaces that make me so sad on cold days. If only they worked, we would never turn the heat on again!

Default Re: what's your winter thermostat setting?

I'm in Canada, on Lake Ontario. We keep the house at 19C during the day (about 66F) and 16C or 17C (61F or 62F) automatically at night. At some point we looked into it because I'm fine with it being even cooler at night but our research at the time suggested a more than 3 degree (C) difference didn't save any money because too much heat was needed to return to the day time temp.

Some in our house would be fine with it higher, I've always been fine with it lower. DD18 will watch the thermostat like a hawk and if she sees 18C, she excitedly turns it up a degree or two. Otherwise, she'll occasionally hound me about turning it up, usually while wearing a t-shirt. I've suggested she put on a sweater.

Just for perspective, we're having a really mild winter. It's currently 1C (33F) and we're expecting about -6C (21F) overnight. More typical in January is below zero temps, day and night. It's rare that we'll manually override the thermostat because the inside temp is fine.

It's in the 20s outside. 70-72. I wear 2-3 layers in that temp..

Hope you can eventually fix your fireplaces.

We did 58 overnight before our 3rd kid.

Living in FL, our winters are mild. It might freeze one or two nights all winter. We are used to being warm, so our heater is set on 72. Even so, we wear sweats and socks in the house. We're basically winter wimps!

We live in South Texas so we're not used to the cold. We often have to flip between heat and air conditioning in the same week. For heat we keep it at 72 or 73. For cooling we keep it at 76/77. For some reason 73 is fine when it's cold outside but freezing when it's hot and vice versa. 76 feels hot when it's cold outside. For reference cold for us is when temps drop into the 30s or low 40s. We don't usually run it at all when temps are between 50-75.

We're in the pacific northwest and I was taught as a child that it's illegal to put the heat over 67 degrees . We keep ours around 65, off at night, and we were just asked by my 16yo if we could "stop having the house at 90 all the time" because he's "tired of it being so hot he can't breathe" . So there's that. But I'd never put it over 68 because sweaters and socks are free .

When we had a thermostat, it was 55 overnight and 65 during the day. Everyone wore wool socks, slippers, and layers.

We have a wood stove now. The first floor is usually 72, second floor is cooler. I have a space heater in my bedroom which I set at 62 when I'm sleeping, 68 if I'm in there studying during the day.

During spring and fall, it's usually 63-65 in our house as we don't light a fire if it's borderline.

Default Re: what's your winter thermostat setting?

This is the first winter we changed our thermostat but we are sleeping with our door closed for the first time because of our new kitty and it gets way too hot in that small room if the thermostat is over 71 degrees at night and we have our register mostly shut too. During the day, it really just depends on the outside temp, but we might leave it at 71 or turn it up to 73. Our house is old and drafty and under-insulated plus our heat comes from ceiling registers and so the floor in our house can easily register at 65 to 68 degrees even at those higher thermostat temps.

As I'm reading and converting temperatures, I'm reminded that our eldest can still often be found wearing shorts if it's 18 - 20C outside. I gave up thinking that was a reflection on me as a mum a long time ago. Then again, he comes by it honestly - there are lots of times I remember my dad shovelling our driveway in a t-shirt or *maybe* a winter coat over a t-shirt but definitely not done up.

I guess it's all what you're used to?

Here in NC, I keep it at 66 during the day. I’ve found it’s the lowest I can go and not have people whining about how cold the house is. I turn it down to 65 at night. That’s not much of a difference, is it.

Default Re: what's your winter thermostat setting?

We do 65 during the day and 60 at night.

We have a heat pump with heat strips that come on if the thermostat is bumped up more than 1 degree at a time. The heat strips are less efficient/economical than the heat pump, so in the morning we have to gradually raise the temp one degree at a time! That’s a bit annoying, but I can definitely feel the difference between 63 and 65 if it gets to be mid morning and no one remembered to bump up the temp all the way!

TX, 65 for heat, 80 for a/c (we did about the same when we lived up north). I wear socks or slippers, plus a shawl or a blanket, and the kids/dh use slippers/blankets probably half the time. (Mostly I really *like* the opportunity to snuggle into blankets.) In the summer we use fans to keep it decent at 80.

Usually people look at me like I'm nuts for keeping it at 65, but on this thread it seems we are on the toasty side, lol.

We keep our heat at 72. The house I grew up in the heat was at 66 during the day and 60 at night. I was always cold. Once we were not counting every penny, I turned up the heat.
