Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
I took a disposable pad and circled it for my pattern, if you want super simple. I used a flannel layer, a microfiber layer, and a fleece layer and sewed them together.

Thanks! So, the flannel on top for comfort and then are the other two both absorbent layers?

Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
I'm a beginning seamstress and I made some in 2012 that were pretty easy. I blogged about it here: http://gracefuldiscipline.blogspot.c...e-waiting.html
(one of the linked patterns no longer works unfortunately, but the easier of the two still does!)

Flannel layer on top, microfiber for absorption, and fleece for mostly waterproof. I've never had anything go through the fleece layer but it isn't as good as PUL.

Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
PUL is pricier than fleece, but nicer; fleece is perfectly sufficient.
I'd start out doing those three layers just top stitched, and if that works well you can try to sew it on the inside and flip it inside out. Since we're talking menstrual rags, however, that's really a bonus ---------- Post added at 03:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 PM ---------- Oh, old towels are nice for the middle layer.

Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
I peeked at the blog post and then looked up zorb on ebay. Of course, the person selling zorb was also selling all these other awesome diaper/pad fabrics. I can see how this could cost some money if I let it! And then there's the follow-through...We should probably start with scraps of something we have

Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
yes!! just start with stuff you have on hand. it can get addicting for sure tho. i love flannel actually the best and i love fleece much more then pul because the pull slips around unless you sandwich it inbetween fabrics. i have never had any of my fleece backed pads leak.
you can use all flannel, a layer of flannel and a layer of terry and a layer of fleece, or any combination really. if you have old cotton tshirts you can use those and just do minimal sewing since it won't fray. i promise it is not a science. anything you put together will work pretty much also do you knit or crochet? bc there are patters for that way also

Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
We just know the very, very basics of crocheting. I guess you would use cotton yarn, like for dishcloths?

Re: Need very simple cloth pad to hand sew with girls
I have to admit I was lazy, and just bought pads for my girls. I figure even though it cost a bunch up front, it's WAY cheaper than buying disposables every month, especially because I refuse to have them using the normal chemically ones.
Personally I like a fleece (or similar) layer on top so that it doesn't feel wet. I got some flannel and some fleece topped when I first started using them, and decided I prefer the fleece, so that's what I got for the girls too. Yes, knitting or crocheting would be with cotton yarn. . . now I'm intrigued by that whole idea
