Sourdough starter?
I normally bake my own bread for the non gluten free members of my family but I have developed a real thing for TJ's sourdough and have been off the track of baking bread ever since. What's the best way to start your own sourdough starter and bread?

Re: Sourdough starter?
You can also do GF sourdough starter. I did some googling at one point and found some good links.

Re: Sourdough starter?
There is a great thread from LisaM about sourdough making. It's super easy. You can also order starter yeast from health food sources like Bob's Red Mill.
Here is a long thread about bread making. I think it might be in here. THIS is the one I was thinking of. Both are great threads.

Re: Sourdough starter?
Wow, thanks for the links I must have been spelling something wrong on my search I didn't get anything. That sounds like a project and a half I had no idea it was that much harder than baking regular bread. I think I will file this in my someday list and happily hand the folks at Trader Joe's my $3 for now.

Re: Sourdough starter?
I read annies-eats.com food blog every day, and today's post happened to be about sourdough starter.
I did it about 6 years ago and kept it going for a while. It was not that hard. I got the instructions from the LLL cookbook.

Re: Sourdough starter?
It doesn't have to be complicated if you don't mind using conventional storebought yeast along with the starter. I just use my favorite bread recipe and use a cup of starter instead of a cup of water and slightly reduce the flour. I let it rise a little longer but not much. I have made bread with only starter but it is a bit more complicated. Most of the time I do it the easy way. The bread still has that luscious flavor.
You do have to take care of the starter but it's not that hard. Mine can go a couple of months in the fridge in a pinch. (I try not to let it go more than a week regularly but I was moving.) I do have a super tough starter though. It has been in my family for about 90 years. |
