I am incredibly bummed by Kashi.

Re: Do you buy cereal? Does it contain Monsanto's genetically modified ingredients?
Ezekiel 4:9 is my fave --I'd be shocked if that had GMO ingredients in it, but I've been buying grape-nuts lately since it's a fair bit cheaper. Not as good nutritionally, but it's fiber and whole grain and very low sugar. The kids like cheerios and Honey Bunches of (sugar and) Oats .
I guess it's time to introduce the fam to the beauty of steel-cut oatmeal . Thanks for the heads-up. I'll look into that. |

Re: Do you buy cereal? Does it contain Monsanto's genetically modified ingredients?
I'd love to buy all non-gmo cereal(and everything else), but my grocery budget is stretched to it's limits already. I can get a giant box of Kellogs mini-wheats for the same price as a reg. size box of organic cereal, and it lasts a whole lot longer. It sucks, but that's the nature of the beast.

Then Kashi no longer offers organic options? I'm pretty sure GMOs are not allowed in certified organic stuff.

We very rarely get a box of organic O's. I think those are GM-free.

Re: Do you buy cereal? Does it contain Monsanto's genetically modified ingredients?
Ever since I read about the study where rats fed the cardboard from the cereal boxes lived longer and had less side effects than the rats who were fed the whole grain cereal, I'm more than a little put off by it. But I will also fully admit that cereal is my #1 guilty pleasure SAD binge food. I keep it on hand when I get it for pennies with coupons and occasionally I give dd a bowl in the morning to tide her over until I can make "real breakfast" (eggs), or I eat it as a snack in the afternoon. I'm not fooled into thinking that there are any "healthy choices" out there though - they're ALL produced using high temp extrusion, except for the Ezekiel 4:9 cereal, which I think is really more like granola...

Well, I don't know what else to make my oldest for breakfast, so he eats cereal. And he's fine with it.

Not a lot of time to explain, so check out this post.
I do not buy boxed breakfast cereal anymore. When I couponed, I did, because it was nearly free or completely free. It's not worth it, though.

Re: Do you buy cereal? Does it contain Monsanto's genetically modified ingredients?
When we were eating cereal it was Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise organic. I assumed with most of the ingredients being organic it was non GMO, although I'm not sure if it said that specifically. Then we went to Bob's Red mill oatmeal, now we're off cereal/oatmeal completely.

Re: Do you buy cereal? Does it contain Monsanto's genetically modified ingredients?
If it isn't organic, and it contains corn or soy, you can pretty much guarantee it contains GMO products. That's what is "affordable" in the food supply.
Kashi makes a couple of certified GMO free lines, and a couple of certified organic lines. The rest uses conventionally grown (which now means GMO) ingredients. |

subbing for ideas until I can figure out how to get cereal out of our lives, too. My kids love the Kashi line.
In a perfect world, my kids would love homemade granola.

Re: Do you buy cereal? Does it contain Monsanto's genetically modified ingredients?
I have been moving away from it. I was never a big cereal eater. DH eats it the most and he won't change that. Ds was starting to and I've been moving away from that as much as possible. Now he usually only eats cereal when DH gets up with him, which has been more and more often lately. I avoid it for the same reasons of others. The rat study, etc.
Being pregnant, our eating has changed a lot though. I have no energy to cook so it's whatever keeps out from spending money at restaurants at this point. Today it will be baked potatoes for dinner, but some nights it's ramen. I had gotten away from the yucky stuff pre-preg though, and know we will again next year once we get settled with the new baby.
