I'm a little late to the party; I hope it turned out!
When using the oven, I use a wire rack set on a baking sheet, run the cake under the broiler, then transfer to a serving plate.
The really fun way is to use a torch to brown the meringue. Put a shot glass of rum in the top of the meringue (make sure to bury the glass in meringue, and pour a little rum down the sides of the cake) and torched that to get a volcano effect. If you sprinkle cinnamon on the flames you will be rewarded with sparks that look like mini fireworks. It's definitely a celebratory cake!
