It sounds like you've got a great start on things, already. I do know that my Pearl following friends seem to really attempt to connect with their dc, more so than the Dobsonites or Ezzo's. The heartstrings are a good idea

I did feel angry, truly. But then, I'd never told him not to pee on my head before

A water mess or a pee mess in the bathroom would have been much easier to handle

Seriously, I have no problem with a safety gate for a 2yo. We use them with ours, because even though he *knows* he shouldn't go in the bathroom alone, he sometimes lacks the impulse control to make himself stop. It's not catering to him, or spoiling him....it's along the same line as freezing your credit card in a block of ice.

It helps remind him to stop and ask for help.
