She does Facebook. She doesn't post much and the phone won't do Farmville, so I'm not sure how much she'll use it on there. She may get hooked after a while. She's terrified of using data, though, and really only plans to play on the phone while she's out.

Lessee... Does she have a Netflix account? If so, I'd get that app. Kindle for iPhone.
Other than that, I'd just help her get familiar with the apps that come with the phone. Bearing in mind she might have to relearn some things when ios7 comes out.

iMessage will be set up as soon as she gets it moved to her iTunes account. It's *the* texting app on the phone now, which makes it easier. It switches automatically between iMessage and regular texts.
She doesn't have Netflix and probably wouldn't like it on the small screen.
Our internet isn't great, so it's never been practical to pay for any streaming sites.
I mentioned tonight that there's a new iOS coming out and she was *not* making the connection that her phone would change entirely with it. When she finally, somewhat got it, the response was "do I have to? I thought that was for new phones..."

I love, love, LOVE the Waze app for directions and avoiding traffic and speed traps
MyFitnessPal and Nike Running, too, if she's into fitness. Oh, and the Seconds free interval timer

I should look at Waze for me. I somehow missed that.
So, my mom used my phone tonight. She's terrified of the keyboard. And having to dial on a touch screen. It's not that she can't. It's just that she's never done it before. She really doesn't do much on her phone, just calls and texts to my brother and I. I told her she could stick with learning those first, but she said it's silly to pay for the smartphone (costs a bit more than a dumb phone) and not actually use it. She's also really concerned she'll use up tons of data without realizing it. I'll show her how to turn it off right away to make her feel better on that one.
I turn it off to play certain games that work offline, but will use data if they can.
