This is the closest I've been able to come to having them taste like what I grew up on - minus pork, MSG, garlic, and other assorted allergens.
uncooked red kidney beans
a pot full of water
about 1/4 bottle of liquid smoke

3 bay leaves
salt and cayenne pepper to taste
simmer until they are done, and serve them over rice (or on white bread with mayo
