Here's a good article on ceiling fans. I think I saw the tv episode discussed here and I remember that the people were appalled that the decorator wanted to get rid of their ceiling fan. If a fan is that important, and you know that you like to use an overhead fan, I say keep it or get one. If it will hardly be used, or you find them the least bit irritating (noise, or little stray hairs constantly being blown in your face

) I think a light fixture would probably look nicer.
