I just discovered how to switch it back. At the bottom of the page is a search link. I was going to try searching for how to switch back but the search page that loaded had an option for "PC view" and clicking that got rid of the mobile display.

The (normal) PC view doesn't take any longer to load and allows me to go right to new posts in a thread. I haven't seen any benefit in mobile mode.

(now I see one benefit; PC mode doesn't say "posted from itouch" so I have to declare that myself.)
