Default Sewing questions

I have several pairs of pants and some shirts that I need to shorten. I also need to take in the waists on some of R’s shorts. Can anyone recommend a tutorial? The shirts are button down shirts with cuffs. I kind of just want to leave them hemmed and just turn them up, rather then cutting them and hemming. Would it be worth it to buy one of those hand held sewing machines for this kind of sewing? For all these years, I have been doing all of this by hand. If you could recommend a brand of sewing machine, that would be great, I can google, but am not feeling up to the task. Thanks in advance.

Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that they might be glorified.
