Have you seen Tom Wright's 'for everyone' series? It's his own translation of the NT with his introductions and commentary included. I've just started reading Matthew For Everyone and I'm really liking it. You should be able to look inside on Amazon.

We have the Quick Reference Edition, which dh was given as a teen. It would make a good guide for young people. Gives a summary of each book, timeline, maps, etc. The original is still in print in various forms. You can read reviews on Amazon. The QR edition, which I think has actually been adapted for young people, is out of print but plenty of copies on Abe Books
