So, typically, stromboli is made with Italian cold cuts, while calzone is essentially a stuffed pizza. Calzones usually have tomato sauce and often ricotta cheese in them, while stromboli do not. There is some overlap, because Americans put EVERYTHING on pizza.
Stromboli is a Phillie invention, totally Italian American, while calzone is an authentic Italian invention.
