Mexican restaurants use lard. If you order the vegetarian entree, you won't be served regular refried beans. Instead, you'll get chunky pinto beans in sauce/cooking liquid.

i always eat vegetarian refried beans b/c i don't eat pork. i have never gotten chunky pintos in sauce. i always get regular refried beans.
some mexican places don't offer vegetarian refried beans, like Rosa's.
i don't know if oil is added to the vegetarian beans at restaurants or not. i know the ones i buy in the store don't have oil in them.
i cooked the pintos yesterday and haven't made refried beans yet. i might try for lunch today.
i'm not thinking that i could get really smooth ones by just mashing them up in the pan. i'm tempted to just throw them in the blender.
