Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

Howdies :)

Let's discuss.
I am not the resident DE specialist, mama that goes by "me" is.
But I'm starting a thread for edumacational purposes.

So, I'll be back to post some general FAQ stuff, but I'd love for people to contribute on the following:
--How do you take it?

--What do you take it for and how's it working for you?

--How do you give it to kids?

--Where do you get it and how much of it, and how much it costs?

:)

This link has a video that's helpful: http://www.earthworkshealth.com/

more info:http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html

I've yet to use it internally, but I'm planning on doing it for the whole family. I *have* used it as an insecticide, and it works great. :)

yah I have used it outside in the garden..but not on me yet.

Leaky gut. Works better than anything else I've tried. For joint pain. It helps if I remember to take it daily. :duck For the pets as a dewormer and for fleas, make sure to not let them breathe it in. I know it doesn't cut it for the mutant fleas here, not sure how it helps with the worms. For the garden, to keep the pests away. I also use it for DS and pets for candida.

Same as I take it.

I have bought it several different places. Earthworks, internetgrocer, whoever has food grade DE cheapest with s/h at the time.

whoa... tell me about the use for leaky gut? I think dh has this.... or something similar.

Re: Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

Well probably the best thing DE is good for is making beautiful poo. :shifty Whether you have leaky gut or need more regularity it helps. My mom had leaky gut so bad she had to wear Depends and this really helped her too.

cobluegirl 03-29-2010 09:40 PM

Re: Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

So how are you taking it? how much? how many times a day?

dh really has issue's here.

sweetpeasmommy 03-29-2010 09:44 PM

Re: Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

For a big issue, I would probably take 2 TBSP working up to that dose. If you want to be more conservative, try 1 TBSP. IIUC silica that isn't used by the body is just excreted.

a parasite cleanse. I read somehwere around here (thanks, Me) about it helping with TMJ. That's my biggest hope. Also have read that it can be used as a natural detoxifier, and is safe while pg and nursing. I like that.

Also, getting rid of parasites can help with night terrors/nightmares, restlessness/tired when waking up, and joint pain.

From the little I've read, I'm convinced it's a GREAT thing. I recently added a handful of it to all my stored foods to keep away mites. We are using it in the garden for fertilizer and pest control. I'm also giving it to the dog because I've read that if one person in the family cleanses, then everyone needs to, including pets.

in tea the same as me, or in chocolate milk. I give it to the dog in a little bit of chicken stock.

the most cost effective way for me to buy it was at the local feed and seed store. The smallest quantity they sold in Food Grade DE (which is essential--taking non-food grade can be deadly) was a 50lb bag for $30. I've been sharing it with all my friends (once I tell them all the amazing benefits), and I'm trying to convince the lady who is raising our steer to slaughter in a few months to use DE as the dewormer rather than the shot she usually does. She's researching now, and says she'll get back to me. If she's willing to
go ahead with it, I'm planning on giving her a bunch (might use up the rest of our bag).

Right now we're doing a 90 day DE cleanse as a whole family. And we are pooping like crazy!!! :shifty

---------- Post added at 11:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:46 PM ----------

Oh, and a question I have. Does anyone know if it settles in the gut and can block absorbtion of things in cattle? I know in humans, if one takes too much, the body will just eliminate it. But the lady with our steer is all worried that it will collect in the cow's gut, and that he won't get fattened up as well because of it. :think I need links too. She won't believe me if I say "my online friend said____". :giggle

Mixed in smoothies or juice. I think I'm going to try baking with it. I have a hard time convincing my daughter to down a cup of juice but eating a whole cookie she can manage no problem. :yes

--What do you take it for and how's it working for you?
Giardia (a parasite that I think we picked up at the local swimming pool). My daughter and I have had diarrhea/soft stools accompanied by sulfur burps for over a year now. The symptoms went away last summer--I suspect because we were eating a lot of oregano, an anti-parasitic. Last fall, my husband started coming down with the same symptoms.

We've been taking it irregularly for three weeks and are already seeing improvement. (I can't believe how much easier diaper changes are when my daughter has a solid stool! :rockon) I plan to start a stricter regimen next month.

I was really reluctant to try it given that I'd read that it "slices and dices" bacteria in the gut. After further investigation I reached the conclusion that "slicing and dicing" cannot be what makes the DE effective.

We got ours at the local feed store. My husband called them and asked if they had it and how much. They said $28 and he went off to pick it up. I was shocked when he came home with a 50lb bag! :jawdrop

How big is this bag? I called a local feed store yesterday and they sell theirs for under $20, and she said it pretty much costs the same as the 5 or 10 pound container. I don't need 50# but I'm wondering how large a bag is this?

Funny you should ask, because I took a picture.

That section of my desk is 4ft long, so I'm guessing the bag is close to 3ft by approx. 18inches. :giggle

It is like flour. Ashley, I've thought about cooking with it, but wondered if it would still work the same yk?

The consistency is like flour.. a little bit more loamy or airy...

:think Hmmm, good question....Well, didn't "me" say she made brownies? Or was that with bentonite clay?

A google search helped me find this recipe for cookies with DE...:shrug3

This page says...

Quote:

Diatomite is highly porous, because it is composed of microscopically small, coffin-like hollow particles. In addition, it is a good absorbent and is resistant to heat. Its typical chemical composition is 86 percent silica, five percent sodium, three percent magnesium, two percent iron, and other minor constituents.

What would be some potential side effects? Does it effect medication or absorption of vitamins and minerals? How does it effect the good gut bacteria? Do you find you need to increase your probiotic intake ?

A friend who has recently been researching DE told me that it is best to take it first thing in the morning, well before eating, or late at night, right before bed because it can block absorbtion of good minerals. We tried to wait until evening tea to take it after I heard this, but forgot to take it too many times. So now I just put it in our morning green smoothies that we drink with breakfast. I figure it may block some minerals, but it's better than not taking it at all.

Also, my friend just told me she read that silica is great for hair, nails, and bones--better than taking calcium supplements.

---------- Post added at 12:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:53 PM ----------

She said people used to get silica in their diets, but since we've changed to a more modern diet, people get very little.

I have been diligent about taking it since this thread started so maybe 4-5 days. :lol My bones feel SO much better, it's not even funny. Most of the winter i was good just taking cal/mag and Vit D every day so I couldn't figure out what was going on now that it's spring. I've lost a couple pounds too which is great because I've been stuck for a while irt weight loss. Why did I forget how great it is?

I think she said something about the soil, but since DE comes from plankton in the ocean, I'm not sure. Maybe there is silica in soil? :shrug. I'll do some research and get back to you.

Re: Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

silica is in things like millet, animal feet and bones... we just don't get that much of it anymore :)

cobluegirl 04-01-2010 08:06 PM

Re: Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

right.. we don't eat stocks made from bones.. that is probably where they got the most of it. Millet also isn't as readily eaten.

Okay, so I eat millet and stock made from bones...so does that mean I don't need DE, then?

From Earthworks Health
Quote:

5. Will DE interfere with any medication I am now taking?

Diatomaceous Earth is a mineral---silica. We have never ran into a situation in the thousands of orders sold where anyone has had a problem or reaction to taking DE. If you have any questions as to interactions with medications you are taking---ask your doctor or pharmacist if taking a silica supplement will cause any problems.
I asked our ND once if it needed to be taken at a different time than meds and he said it didn't matter. Clay is a lot different and we skip it when taking anything important.

as a society we don't. It isn't as common. How long have you been doing that? all your life?

I am just guessing here..LOL I think that most of us would benefit even if we do do stock etc..because we weren't raised on a healthy diet. :shrug3

DancingWithElves 04-02-2010 08:55 AM

Re: Diatomacious Earth ( DE ) thread :)

to be honest, i am not sure just how much silica can be absorbed from DE. most of it is not soluble kind... just kinda like sand, only different in consistency and shape...
but then i don't know how much silica we'd need so, i'm just thinking here...

if you read around long enough, you'll see some very hateful articles talking about relation of silica to lupus, and many other diseases, and how DE should be banned, etc. which is just nonsense, b/c there is a world of difference b/w industrially used, processed DE, and silica from other sources, and pure food grade DE. those folks truly don't know there 's a difference. it's like banning corn, b/c of corn syrup.

for me, DE just makes my intestines feel better. settles my stomach... i 'd love to see what it does long term.

i take 2 tbsp once a day as long after dinner as i can...

both clay and de make me and ds constipated, but not dh :shrug3
all i have to do is take some mag citrate (which i have to add to my cal mag to change the ratio when the spirit moves me so) and i'm back to normal. i would say that de and clay should be followed with a full glass of fluid, which i don't do, so that's probably why the constipation.

lessee, what else :think
oh, i ain't gonna lie, it's gross :yuck but goes best in chocolate, chai, coffee, coke. i only mix it in a small amount, like 2 oz or so, then this is *important* i drink it while having water ready. and *before taking a breath or exhaling* put the water to your lips and drink a few sips. then you can't take you ever took it at all! no flavor, no nuffin :tu

Here is a great site (from my friend) where it talks a lot about the benefits of silica http://www.earthworksde.com/page/page/4135163.htm
Quote:

In Years past, our bodies would get enough silica from our diet. Unfortunately, many of the foods we now eat have lost their nutritional value due to soil nutrient depletion, food processing, and chemicals. Supplemental use of Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth is essencial to total body health.
Also, I don't think you can taste DE at all! The only way I can tell it's there is from the texture. It's a little chalky. But if I put it in a smoothie, I can't tell it's there at all. So Rachel, don't be scared off too quickly!
