study shows vegetarians may live longer

http://healthland.time.com/2013/06/0...y-live-longer/
Interesting article.
This kind of statement always confuses me though:
Quote:

Among a group of 70,000 participants, researchers determined that vegetarians had a 12% lower risk of death compared with nonvegetarians.

because we all have a 100% risk of death, don't we?

In the article they seem quite reluctant to admit that meat might possibly be unhealthy - look at this quote:
Quote:

“We can’t tell from this current paper with certainty, but one of the most plausible potential reasons contributing to this beneficial association is perhaps the absence or reduction of meat intake,”

It means death over the course of the study. So if you are going to study a group of people for 10 years, the vegetarians had a 12% lower chance of dying in those 10 years. Obviously everyone will die eventually.

Re: study shows vegetarians may live longer

I don't know if there is reluctance there, but part of that statement means that there may be other health behaviors associated with vegetarianism that could partially explain the results.

I think this result is discouraging for those veg eating for health, actually, but I've seen an analysis of this study that shows that if you look at what the vegetarians were eating, it was on average not a WFPB diet. The absence of meat alone is not enough, it's what you do eat that matters, apparently.

OTOH, 12% lower risk of heart related death is not bad.
