Best sling/carrier to give new mom?

Which brands and/or styles do you think would be good as a gift for a very young new mom? Let's say under $50, something basic.

baby k'tan? Those aren't quite under 50 but maybe you could find a sale.

Do you have the Close carrier where you are?

If not I'd go moby or ring sling, but I don't know how the prices run where you are

I don't know what's offered locally. I could order online.

Infantino mei tai maybe? No wrapping involved, it's pretty straightforward.

Hmmm...for that price I think a Baby K'Tan would be good. If she'd be up for learning, a Moby wrap or similar is great for the early months too.

My go-to carrier recommendation these days is the Lillebaby b/c it really can do it all from birth through toddler, and it's pretty easy to use. But it's also $120.

I would look at sleeping baby productions ring slings. She does wonderful work and has some great budget options. It would also last longer than a stretchy wrap like a Moby or ktan. You can also find like new stretchy wraps for cheap on Craigslist or other resale sites.

Is the baby born yet? SBP mentioned above was my go-to after the Moby.

I like Rockin Baby ring slings. I don't know what size the momma is that you are buying for, but part of the reason I chose Rockin Baby was because I am plus sized, and it came in a bit longer length than many other ring slings. Plus, they will donate a sling to a mom in Haiti for every sling they sell. Amazon Prime has a few for under $50.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I'll dig in to the choices soon. The baby isn't born yet, and the mom is fairly slim.

I've found ring slings or stretchy wraps (aka Moby but those are really thick for how warm it is where I live) to be the most new mom friendly.

I usually ask what they want. Kinda ruins the surprise, but it makes me feel like theyre more likely to use it if they kinda chose the carrier.

I thought I'd also get a good book for her...is Dr Sears' Baby Book still the go to for AP?

I want a Lillie Baby wrap for the first few months. It goes on like a Moby but the fabric is much, much lighter. My friend who runs a babywearing boutique tried one out last summer and says she was able to wear a baby in the Southern summer heat without discomfort for hours. Sold! If you want something to last beyond the first few months, I love mei tai styles.

I know a few friends who really like Attached at the Heart by Lysa Parker of Attachment Parenting International. I haven't read it or Sears in quite some time though.

Has it been updated? When I last read it, back in the mid 00's, it was already sounding dated...

I find that for new moms, websites are a more helpful resource than books (unless the mom is a huge book reader or doesn't use a smartphone).

I have noticed this shift over the past decade as the internet has become better organized. Parenting websites that have content formatted for smartphone screens, updated articles (ex. "Fourth trimester" tips, or Fisher Price Rock n Play controversy), and a variety of topics focusing on a new mom's emotional needs, her baby's needs, personal stories, health articles, and videos accompanying articles are really helpful b/c it provides not only tips but also a sense of 'other people know what I'm going through' because of the blog format). Plus it's easily searchable, which is handy when you're feeling frazzled.

AP Parenting that used to be on the fringes has also become more mainstream (ex. babywearing is everywhere, cosleeping is still controversial but a crib/side carred bed is supported widely, breastfeeding advocacy is easily accessible, and the idea of a new baby's emotional needs ('fourth trimester') have a lot more popularity than even a few years ago, and that is reflected in the parenting resources out there too.

Anyway...all that to say, it's not a bad idea to give a book. Just that it might depend a lot on the mom's personality and age.
