hair goop question

My daughter has very thick, nearly waist-length hair. She must put in some victory rolls for a play that she is doing. She's getting really good at putting them in, but they get flat pretty quick. She needs some mud, gel, pommade, wax, or whatever. I have no idea about these things! We normally are as chemical and fragrance-free as we can get. But, as this isn't going to be an every-day thing, we can make an exception, as long as it's not too strongly fragranced (will trigger asthma.)

So, I need suggestions for products! Thanks!

You could try a mousse. That might help it stay longer.

You could also try watered down Elmer's glue. It is what we used for hair all the time when I was doing theater because it would hold and then wash out easily.

Wow! That would be really cool to try, except she can't have the gluten in her hair.

Mousse is going to give you volume, but gel is better in terms of hold. Pomades and muds allow you to get a slick or piece-y look.

I'm not sure what you mean by victory rolls, but my go-to for up-do's is gel. Most mousses don't have the staying power I like, and I do't usually want slick. There's also hairspray, but you're probably much more likely to run into problems with asthma.

Synchronized swimmers (and punk rockers) when I was a kid used gelatin. The swimmers used clear unflavored gelatin (when it hit the cold water, it held like crazy) and the punkers got those funky bright spikes and mohawks from Jell-o.

This is similar to what she's required to have...

Currently, she can put in a pretty good roll, but not quite that tall. But the curls eventually fall and lay on her head like a pin-curl. And she must do an Irish dance (lots of bouncing) and have her hair stay!

Has she tried teasing her hair (primarily the roots) before rolling it?

Yeah you're not likely to hold a hairstyle like that without a) extensive back-combing or b) a 'switch' or nylon form underneath or c) both. It also helps to either go several days without washing hair or put something like dry shampoo in it to grubby it up and texturing.
For fixatives, perhaps a spray gel might work well.
