Oooo, forgot about thatmoms podcasts! I haven't finished all of them. :)

I've found VFesque beliefs becoming common among the youth that we work with. We are part of a fairly conservative lutheran denomination and live on campus with the college age kids and extreme patriarchal teachings are becoming very, very popular with the young people. I guess religious rules appeal to all age groups! ;)

Btw, had to mention that I have loved your blogs at dare to disciple. Awesome.

:jawdrop I am totally shocked by many of those quotes. I had no idea, really. Disgusting. :sick I really don't understand how any of that could be portrayed as scriptural.

I know I've had friends reading Baucham. This concerns me now.

subbing.

Our family was introduced to the whole Babywise/Pearl/Tripp/Qf lifestyle but thankfully it never 'stuck'.... but I am seeing a lot of people I really care about still emeshed in this and a whole new generation of families hard core about these teachings. It makes me sad. But I am so exhausted I have no energy to 'go there' and even try to dissuade them...they are fully convinced in their own minds. I know. I lived it...sorta, iykwim. :(

Re: Talk to me about Vision Forum

Vision Forum is who I blame for my parents not attending my wedding.

I "dishonored" and disobeyed them by marrying the man I believe God wanted me to marry, because he wasn't their pick.

My mom even went so far as to say, "If you don't have your father's blessing, what do you have?" Um, I guessed..."What, a curse?!" And she actually said Yes.

My wedding day was the happiest and saddest day of my life all in one. I still don't look back on it with a lot of fond memories.

Personally, without reading much of anything more than what I experienced, I won't go near them with a ten foot pole.

That is SO sad. Your parents missed out. Do you feel they support you in your marriage now?

That, in my mind, qualifies as emotionally abusive and when you tie God into it you get a spiritually abusive environment. God does NOT say that we are truly beautiful only when we fulfill x commands, and most of the things they talk about are NOT commands.

Oh, MIT, that is just heartbreaking. :bheart I'm so sorry that they would believe those things and treat you that way. :(

I had several friends who wanted to marry someone different than their parents chose for them, but ultimately decided to submit and marry the person their father picked. In some cases they met their future spouse only a few times before the wedding.

I'm sorry your parents responded that way. I know someone else who ended up in that situation too . . . he picked out his own bride and his parents saw that as sin and rebellion, refused to get to know her, attend the wedding, or be involved in their lives afterwards. I don't know if they were involved specifically with VF or not, but they definitely were influenced by patriarchal teachings.

I feel like I've been living in a bubble. Quite happily, I might add. I've never encountered anything like this. :bheart

Those quotes about fathers and daughters are so disturbing.

Re: Talk to me about Vision Forum

I wonder if we could make a list somewhere of people, books, and organizations that are associated with VF. As a homeschooler I don't want to inadverdantly sign up for anything involving them.

I think I got a catalog from them once before I knew what it was, looked at it and threw it out. Is this the group that has a long-distance lending library that homeschooling parents can use?

Thanks for starting this thread, Katigre. I am :sick that these people and ideas have such a foothold in the HS community. Our Christian HS associations need to know that we won't support these kinds of speakers

Purple_Kangaroo quoted:

". . girls whose hearts are turned to their fathers will behave as Doug Phillips’ daughters: anticipating his needs, offering encouragement and physical affection (‘rubbing their fingers through Daddy’s hair’), and rejecting ‘patricidal’ friends who encourage them to keep secrets from their fathers” (Joyce, 224).
OK, aside from all the spiritual craziness involved with VF, encouraging daughters to be physically affectionate like that (bolded above) with fathers, and saying God gave daughters to help fulfill a father's desire for attention from a younger woman (quoted in another post), just seems totally icky. I mean, almost incestuous--if not sexually, then emotionally. :sick

I'm also disappointed to see that ICR, Institute for Creation Research--an organization my husband and I have supported and been blessed by--lists Doug Phillips on their website as an adjunct professor of apologetics at ICR. I'm considering sending them a letter about it.
