saying 'if things aren't taken care of i will have to take them away' stops really helping

kenz and abs have had to do their room, it was a wreck, so today i told them they needed to have their things taken care of by lunch. at lunch id go in and take everything else so you won't have it' kenz informed me they were done, and just to be sure i asked 'so everything is taken care of?' she said 'everything we want :shifty so everything else you can take away'

Wow. Dh has been trying to get me to do this with the children and swears they aren't going to be scarred for life if the decision is theirs. I've not been able to do it so far. But, seriously, we need to get rid of some toys. Badly.

They play with the millions of Thomas and his friends, the dinosaurs and . . . well that's about it.

:yes That would be my middle daughter precisely :lol. I've had that exact same technique backfire on me more than once with her. Problem is, what she wants to keep and what I want to keep are different entirely :rolleyes. My older daughter, however, will frantically rush around the room rescuing all her stuff from the mom-on-a-mission at the slightest provocation. I've had to resort to stealth decluttering with her stuff. She'd keep dryer lint if it was a pretty color :rolleyes.
