I think they are just as much work (dust) as regular blinds. I like my windows *open* (nothing blocking the view) or *closed* (curtains). I am also super "lazy" in that I've tried other types of curtains. (tie backs, etc). It feels like too much "work" to open them when they are more than, "tug and open." "Tug and closed." :)

I rarely opened blinds when we lived in places that had them. I didn't want to look through the slats, and I like them to hang perfectly evenly if they are going to be pulled up and open. They rarely do, so I just left them closed and lived in a cave....which causes sun-deprivation depression for me. People who do not live in sunny places-even during winter-probably do not relate. I am very spoiled where I live!

We have 33 windows. :shifty I have curtains on all of them....and nothing else. Open or closed. Sun or no sun. View or no view. :) The basement windows came with blinds. I hate them. They are also covered with curtains.

We also hired someone to hang all 33 curtain rods. My marriage couldn't handle the stress of even that simple level of handy work! :bag

My dream non-curtain window covering is those cloth blinds that open from the bottom and the top. Swoon. A relative has them. :heart

That all makes sense :) We only have like ten windows. I don't super love cleaning blinds, but I do like the way the faux wood ones look.

Whoa, I didn't know they made blinds that went from bottom to top!!

This is the kind of combo of panels and roman shades that I like. You don't need to use the exact same fabric, but you could. Co-ordinating is also nice.
http://static1.squarespace.com/stati...ormat=original

If you want faux wood blinds, that could also look nice. I prefer white...but do you prefer wood toned?

I like your colour palette. A simple rule is to have 60-30-10 when it comes to colour. Sixty percent of the main colour, 30% of another colour, and 10% of the last.

When hanging artwork think 75-80% of the space. When hanging a picture or grouping over the sofa, it should take up 75-80% of the space, following the rule of the grouping shape matching the shape of the space.

I prefer white faux blinds for sure :)

Thank you for the percentages- those are helpful for me.

:lol

Mondays are my day without my kids. I make a big to do list and then I spend more of my time sucked into the black hole. It's very dangerous! But fun!

You have some wonderful suggestions here! Congratulations on the new house and I think a blank canvas is exciting, you can make it your own right from the start.

Don't forget to show us some pictures when you get started :)

Here are some pictures of our small entryway and of our breakfast nook/living room area. Ideas? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c7cfb7c9a4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...61cefdfc08.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8e53ca4be4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...45f4c6b9fc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...61e137c4e6.jpg

We are eventually getting all new furniture except we already have this Target entertainment center (could I paint this...?). https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b9277af21c.jpg

Help me brainstorm? Send me pins? Live vicariously through me? How can I make it kid/baby friendly, since our first little one is joining us in August

You've got a nice home :)
You can turn your baby's room into a stylish haven. You can adorn your plain walls with soft mirror frames. They can create a sense of space and light. My best advice would be proper illumination. You can place picture lights in the room to create a warm glow.
Are you expecting a boy or a girl?:)

Thank you!

We are having a girl. We want to do lavender and mint green as the colors because they feel mature. Nothing "cutesy" or too "themed" (like to zoo animals or Harry Potter or Star Wars or whatever).

We actually do need lights installed in our house. They ran the electricity to all the rooms but didn't install light fixtures. We will do that over the summer- blinds and lights are at the top of our priority list, but we need money first, haha.

Any suggestions on light fixtures? Should we go ahead and install ceiling fans?

From a decorating pov, no to ceiling fans.:no From a practical point of view, yes.:yes I have one ceiling fan in my house because we have a central wood burning stove and the fan helps to move the air around in the winter. If it wasn't for that I would have a lovely hanging fixture in our great room instead.

I have a really cool design that is child-friendly. The blend of colors gives the room a really relaxing ambiance plus the bins can be used to store your kid's toys. :)

That's funny. My Dad bought expensive light fixture/ceiling fans that have designs. I think they are gorgeous. Our first house has the cheapest ones they sell. Big difference.

Christine....I don't think you're a bad decorator. Maybe you just have family/friends who like 50 million knick knacks and so *they* comment on your clean, minimalist, modern style as being "bad at decorating?" Are you *really* bad at it?
