Effective Parenting

I can't remember- Are the Parenting Effectiveness Training / Institute of Biblical Parenting- have they been discussed here?
There is a seminar in my area soon, I am wondering if I should go or recommend others go or not go.

That is who I was thinking she was referring to. Do you know much about them? For some reason, I get their weekly email newsletter. I'm not sure how or when I would have subscribed, but I have enjoyed reading their tips.

I don't think they've taken a "no spanking" stand, but I like their material and I have implemented a lot of it to help deal with some really negative crappy attitudes (we moved on from there but it was very helpful at the time). I like about everything I've read/heard from them. I think their anger management stuff is excellent... but they have a lot more to offer than that.

Thanks, Christa! I have found a lot of helpful stuff in what I've read as well in the email tips. I've thought about getting their book because it seems like it has a lot of good practical tips and also because I see them really focusing on relationship rather than just outward obedience, but I've hesitated to do so because I wasn't sure what it would say about spanking.

Oh, now I remember why I have hesitated to order their book. I was just looking at their website and they sell and recommend the books by Lou Priolo. Isn't he very pro-spanking?

I have no idea :shrug but I know if I were to have a ministry about helping families relate better, and wanted to get it into all churches... I doubt I'd make a huge fuss about the spanking issue, kwim?

Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller's stuff is excellent, and I've always read them emphasizing relationship first... he even talks about it quite a bit.

Christa,

Do they talk about spanking at all in any of their books? I see that they also recommend Ginger Plowman on their website. I believe she is the pro-spanking author who appeared on the PBS program with Joanne and Crystal. I can't get a good feel for where they stand on the issue - and perhaps they just take a neutral stance. :shrug

No, I've not seen anything punitive in their books... they call the comfort corner "taking a break" and put an emphasis on relationship, and anger management (we needed that sooooo bad).

I've heard that their toolbox of consequences mentions spanking, but overall I really like everything else I've read from them, and the Say Goodbye to Whining book is supposed to be excellent.

I read a little about "taking a break"
They say that you are not supposed to talk to the child, or accompany the child, and that it is supposed to facilitate a desire for repentance. It doesn't quite feel like the same things as the comfort corner.
Even so, we use the term "take a break" in our home.

:think I didn't get that out of it... I got that they need to go cool off until they are ready to talk... at least that's how we use it which is a very useful tool in a family of hot tempers :shifty
