thinking of a storage coffee table- pros and cons?

Our coffee table is pretty beat up. It was from Target and nothing super expensive. It's on our family room where we spent most of our time. It's used a lot. I'm thinking I'd love to get something new- something that opens and can be used for blanket storage. I'm not sure if I can find something big enough, most seem more trunk size. But if I can, is this going to be a bad idea? One con would be that it has to be cleared off to open/close, but I don't think that's a huge issue. Does a leather top get easily scratched and beat up? Our table has gotten quite scratched.

Thinking something like this, but it would have to be bigger.

I knew a lady who had a huge one like that. She used two food trays, the nice ones you would use to bring people food in bed. She put coasters, a small fake plant, a Bible, note pad and pens on there. Then it was a quick matter, of they put everything back in the trays when they were done. To move them to the couch and loft the top.

I used to have an ottoman that could be used for storage, but what is out of sight is out of mind and we never used what was inside. Ours was fake leather and it didn’t wear well at all. We now have a wooden table with a shelf below. I have two large baskets under the table that hold books and extra blankets.

We have a storage ottoman that we put extra blankets in, and I love it.

I'd do something like that as a storage ottoman. Frankly the cushioned topping doesn't look very valuable as a coffee table... but I guess it depends on what you use the coffee table for..... Ours is almost always more of a work station, or a food station. Both are better served by a hard top.

I have and LOVE LOVE LOVE a coffee table where the top lifts up. It is SO practical for the way we use our coffee table (dh uses it to work on his computer. we also use it as a snack table when we're watching movies).

SO I guess my first question is what are your primary uses for a coffee table? And woudl a cushioned top fulfill those needs or do you need a more classic hard top model?

I had a big storage ottoman for blankets. It was great until ds2 decided it was fun to pee in the little indents where there were buttons. Then we lent it to my in laws with the intention of getting it back when ds was older but their cats ruined it by scratching it up. Other than that I loved it, so if you don’t have a cat, I say go for it!

We had storage ottomans for awhile and never used the storage part. They had stuff in them, but we just never made use of getting stuff in and out. If I were to buy a storage coffee table, I'd get one with drawers on runners or cabinets.

For me opening from the side would be essential and opening from the top would feel a hassle.

We have used storage as a coffee table for years. The smaller square ones can be grouped together to make larger ottoman/tables and you don’t need to open the whole thing then. We don’t keep much on top of our table it pretty much gets cleared every night so it is t a hassle to open it to get blankets. Currently we have a trunk as the table.

Thanks for all the input! Definitely gives me a lot to think about. I've thought about a storage ottoman, but I'm not sure it would be big enough. We have a few quilts, so they are bulkier. It's also tricky because we're probably going to have to put a piano in that room (can't get it where I was thinking we could put it), so that will require some rearranging of furniture. Good thoughts though to consider!
