New word thread
I thought this might be fun. I came across a word today that I didn't know and had to look up. I thought I'd share it and make a place for us to share other new words. Have you come across anything interesting lately? Maybe your favorite word?
My word today was execrable . It means extremely bad, terrible, atrocious. |
Re: New word thread
I love it! I've heard execrable one time and it's a cd of a Narnia book being read. The great god Tash is described with that word.
:think I'll keep my ears/eyes open for a new one today |
Re: New word thread
Ooh, I love words. I am gonna like this thread!
I heard and looked up a new word this week. Let me try to remember what it was... :think |
Re: New word thread
I recently learned a bad word. A very, yucky, bad word. Muricide. Only read the spoiler if you don't have a weak stomach or the timing for a disgusting story is good.

Re: New word thread
Threnody. It was in a book I was reading to the kids. It's a lament (poem, story, song) composed as a memorial for a dead person.

Re: New word thread
The word post-truth was used in our church sermon this morning. Apparently it's the 2016 word of the year according to Oxford dictionaries. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/wo...-the-year-2016

Re: New word thread
I came across word I was unfamiliar with in this article -- "diktat."
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine...ocracy/513872/ "Those citizens who fantasize about defying tyranny from within fortified compounds have never understood how liberty is actually threatened in a modern bureaucratic state: not by diktat and violence, but by the slow, demoralizing process of corruption and deceit." diktat: an order or decree imposed by someone in power without popular consent. Anyway, I thought it was a good word to know. :) |
Re: New word thread
Interesring, it's like "dictate" but different :think. I love etemology and linguistics.

Re: New word thread
The boys played scrabble on Monday. I had previously promised if any of them played 'caziques' then we would all get doughnuts.
Mr 9 managed it after mr 14 took pity and left an available e. He scored 80 and mr 14 still won, that's my boy!!! Doughnuts were paid for by a mystery donation that dh came home with after finding a financial gift in his pigeon hole. So it was meant to be. Caziques means a tribal chief. Plural of. They got it out of the rules info that came with the anniversary edition. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Re: New word thread
I came across this word while reading today.
irredentist: a person advocating the restoration to their country of any territory formerly belonging to it. I don't foresee myself using that one very often. :) |
Re: New word thread
So then it's not a sparkly tooth doctor? :shifty
