Italian or French?
My DD wants to learn Italian because she was born there (but left when she was 2). We'll probably go there every 3 years for a visit.
I'd like to re-learn French. :shifty We'll do Spanish in high school. NOT interested right now. |
Re: Italian or French?
Ummm...both? :popcorn
I speak French, I don't speak Italian. I'd be torn. I'd think that working on the language you already know some of and would best be able to support would be good. But if *she* is interested in another language, then...that does seem like a good option to pursue. |
Re: Italian or French?
You should really do Spanish b/c that's what her friends are learning. :yes
Although, I think Spanish and Italian are really similar so if she learns Italian, if you do Spanish in high school, a lot of it would be familiar to her. |
Re: Italian or French?
French isn't nearly as useful, and I regret trying to teach it to my children. (I learned it as a child, and was fluent back then, but I don't live near any population of French speakers.) Italian is easier to learn, and she's motivated for her own reasons to learn it. It will be more useful than French when you're ready to add Spanish.

Français :yes
But I'm bias. |
Re: Italian or French?
Thanks!
I guess I can learn French and let her learn Italian. This isn't about me. :shifty NOT interested in Spanish before high school unless we move to Spain. :heart Which is at least four years away. She can go spend a summer in Italy with our old neighbor who LOVES my DD like a granddaughter. :) Italian is beautiful. She could call our neighbor or skype with her every day, for reals. Not sure why I even considered French when I factor that in! |
Re: Italian or French?
Oh man, if you have a connection with a native speaker, GO WITH IT. It's hands down the best way to learn, and even if she's not immersed, having someone to talk to *at all* is going to do wonders for her fluency. You just have to convince your Italian friend not to translate and to stick strictly to Italian. Rough at first but so worth it later!
