I talked with the lady on the phone and she was soooo nice, sweet, and well informed. I wish I could meet her :) I would soak in everything she knew about clay :giggle
It costs more because it is a much purer, cleaner, regulated source. It is safe for internal cleansing.
The less expensive ones are good for external but should never be put on open wounds or taken internally. Since they might contain certain things like metals or tetnus (it is from the ground which can naturally have that).

There isnt much clay cant help! I was going to post here about all the ways I have personally used it, the results, and how but i guess im putting it off because it would be quite lengthy :O And it could go in all kinds of areas, health, beauty, recipes, allergies, autism, etc....
So in short my family has used it for:
burns-awesome!
Flu
husbands jungle rot and weird undiagnosable skin stuff on his feet from the military
cellulitis (drastic improvement overnight, dried by second/thirdish day!)
blisters from shoes
ive removed small moles/skin tags on myself
food poisoning
heartburn
eczema
cleansing/detoxing/antiparasite (externally and internally)
curl booster
asthma
bug bites
rashes
cellulite
contact dermatitis
dandruff
regulating bowel movements gently
deoderant
swelling
bruises
clogged pore that looks like a pimple
facial/skin firmer/black head remover (my beauty routine for years)
allergies and red/puffy eyes from allergies
liver detox
earaches(paste behind the ears to speed things up)
in my toothpaste
remove white coat on my tongue
stye/pink eye

I use it during pregnancy for:
cleansing/detoxing/antiparasite (externally and internally)
asthma got worse with last pregnancy (I was able to stop using inhaler)
hemeroids
dandruff
swelling in the ankles (foot soaks)
heartburn
weight gain
edema
blood sugar
keeps me regular better than any fiber or overcounter out there
the dark spots I randomly get on my skin
strange cravings
sleep better

Children:
-mouth sores
-urinary tract infections(uti's)
-bee stings
-metal detox
-pavement knee scrape (my 2 year old fell and scraped her knee pretty bad in an area i really wish she hadnt fallen and the next morning i realized she had a small pebble still under her skin and some black stuff that wouldnt come out of another part of the scrape. I wasnt sure how i was gonna get it out. but to be sure it didnt get infected and to put down the swelling,I put a glob of clay paste on the spot and covered it with a band aid for 30 minutes. When i took the clay off the pebble came off with the clay, it had softened her skin up and the pebble actually came out on its own! the black stuff came out too. all before i even rinsed it. wow)
-eyes (my daughter has strabismus that is worsened with allergies. ive been putting clay on her eye lids(but not near the eyelashes) before bed for 4 days now (6/22/10) and we were walking by some men pulling and cutting weeds and whatnot off the fencing and she didnt even break a tear or rub her eyes. she also says that her peripheral vision is better and can use her eye muscles to keep from crossing right after i take the clay off. not magic, just did what it was suppose to, decreases swelling and started healing the skin )

For babies:
thrush
redness/odor in skin folds
diaper rash
eczema
colic
gentle bath/cleanser
over active letdown if nursing
sleep longer stretches in the night
teething (my fourth child and only one to have the luxury of clay doesnt know what it is like to cry from teething. all my others had a terrible time)
House:
removed hair dye from the grout inbetween bathroom tiles
fruit/veggie wash

These are just things that I have used it for with success but there are tons of other ways I havent tried yet.
:think thats all I can think of right now, its kind of late :)

You just make a paste and dab it on, let dry, then wash off. Or you can wash your face with the paste as maintenance without having it dry.
I have seen lotions and soaps that contain clay already but I would think the straight stuff is much more effective and im sure less expensive in the long run.

The same way it draws out spider venom or pimples is the same premise it draws out toxins that cause cellulite.
When I was younger I did one of those plastic body wraps. It takes inches off instantly and tightens and smooths cellulite. Only thing is it returns pretty fast and sometimes comes back worse.
I also did body brushing on my thighs.
Clay does what the plastic wrap did but much better. Though the inches arent gone instantly, it clears the cellulite and smooths/tightens the skin. Much deeper than the plastic. It removes it and it stay gone unless you go crazy with the diet and never use it again for a long while. And clay did for me in less than a month what it took body brushing to do in 6 months.
Not sure if it was so effective because I take it internally and externally but it works. Its even suppose to work on spider veins but I dont have any so I cant say if it works or not personally.
But it works for cellulite! Its no mistake the spas and retreats charge big bucks for clay wraps and even serve brownies with clay in them. This stuff works, and if I had the casholah to blow I would pay for it in a spa. But I dont, so I make my own clay smoothies and do my own skin treatments. :)
There is nothing as indulgent as doing a sea salt/coconut oil exfoliation then a clay treatment on the legs. Your legs feel like butter after.
Oh I forgot to add to the list earlier, clay is also great for soothing the leg/bikini area after hair removal. Wether its waxing or shaving. And its a great skin softener on the feet, elbow, and knees. Not quite as good as a parafin wax but over time it gets the same results.
Did I say how much I love clay :shifty

Lol no, no, dont drink it straight  :sick
You can add it to anything really. Even juice. It should only be something like a 1 to 10 ratio if I remember right. I always pull out the pamphlet since I have preggo brain often.
With such a ratio and letting it sit for 24 hours it shouldnt really have a texture. Its more of just cloudy/colored water. So if you put it in a drink it might change the color but shouldnt change the texture.
I put it in our fruit smoothies. I just throw in whatever fruit I have, ice, unsweetened juice or water, some mint/parsley/spinach whatever I have handy. I posted a smoothie I accidentely made that tastes like strawberry quick to me if you wanted an exact recipe. I put it in the the doritos thread I started.
Hink also gave me a recipe that it works well in. Its in one of her posts here about a rash she had
:scratch  let me go look for it. I keep loosing my posts so ill post this, try to open another window, then edit with it.
Here's hinks:
"So here's what I do.  I use 1/2 banana, 4 strawberries, a few squirts of cream of coconut (or coconut flakes), pomegranate juice (I'm not sure how much I use, I just pour a little in...maybe 1/2 cup?), handful of spinach, few pinches of parsley, and ice.  And it really is soooooo yummy!  I think the pomegranate juice really cuts the taste of the greens.  Sometimes I use too much parsley and I can taste it, but I still really like it when I can taste the parsley b/c its sorta a fresh taste. "
Here's the other:
-large carton of strawberrys (1lb)
-1 roma tomato
-a handful of the stems, only, of fresh spinach
-1 very small sprig of parsely
-8oz Dannon Activia strawberry yogurt
-about a cup of rice milk (West soy rice beverage)
-large glass full of ice
sweeten with cane sugar
(serves 3 small kids glasses and 2 adults or about 3 1/2 large servings)
Eta: I now use xylitol as a sweetner and for our teeth. I just read in passing somewhere that you shouldnt mix clay and dairy. It didnt say why though?

I am a firm believer in high quality bentonite clay!! :yes I always keep some on hand in case of brown recluse bites, after seeing how incredibly fast and effective it was for ds when he got a bad bite on his leg a few years ago. I make a poultice using bentonite and colloidal silver. Wonderful, amazing stuff!!! God knows what He is doing! :yes :smile :heart

Interested to learn more from ME, now, too! :rockon

I haven't ever found any info on if bentonite is safe internally while bfing -- anyone know?

J3K, I'd like to hear about putting it on the soles of my feet to draw out toxins - again, safe during bfing? Do you just make a poultice and put it on the soles of your feet??

We use bentonite internally for cleansing and externally in poultices for several things mentioned here :)

:yes you could ask Carol at www.earthslivingclay.com she was the one that assured me that it was safe for me during the pregnancy as well as for my youngest who is 2yrs.
It is FDA approved as a food additive and the container does not have to carry a warning for pregnant or nursing women. I didnt specifically ask her about nursing though, which is why I mention her site.
Eta:speaking specifically of the clay they sell. not all clay!

btw, I used it as a mask the other night and it healed up 95% of the allergic reaction I was having. I also put it on the spot that was not healing up...it was scabbed, but not healing. The next day it was tons better. I'm pretty impressed.

Just like Kym said "God knows what He's doing" :yes
My list is only of the things that I have tried it for and I can attest for it working. There are so many others things it can be used for.
To use it on the skin you can do whatever works easiest for you and how much your needing it to pull out toxins/soothe.
I have really rough eczema on my face. So I make a paste and let it dry, then wash it off. (The less expensive clay will work just as good for this)
Then if I feel it starting to return I just make a thinner paste and wash my face with it. THe wash will touch up the smoothness for my face. But sometimes Im in a rush in the morning and I just rinse with water, then I forget and my face gets rough again. But whenever I want to use the mask it will take it all off again with one application.
I have put it with my natural deoderant that wasnt working well enough for my preggo odor :giggle and it didnt dry. It mixed in and stayed just fine. So well, I use the clay instead of the deoderant when I need it (I normally dont wear deoderant)
So if you put it in with a lotion I would say it would be just fine so long as you dont put to much in. But I have never read of an actual ratio to add in. Just off of what I have used.
My son has light eczema on his back. And all he needs is a light sprinkle in his bathwater twice a week and thats enough for his skin.
My husband use to have bumps on the back of his upper arm and I give him clay 3 or 4 times a week in a smoothie and thats all his skin needs.
We no longer use lotions or oils though. My dh does out of habit :shrug but he doesnt need it.
Last week, my body was releasing a lot of toxins, giving me red bumps here and there every day. So I splurged and dumped about a cup in my bathwater. THey went away and I just started feeling a few here and there. So the bath kept my skin clear for a week but not my face. And I take clay internally daily. My kids just every other day unless I can tell they might need to not skip that day.
All that to try and explain :O what skin needs what kind of treatment and what might work. One thing is for sure. It works.
Right Mercella :wink

https:// anitagrant.com/index.php?age=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.fl ypage&product_id=55&category_id=16&option=com_phps hop&Itemid=41
It had recipes for hair and body wraps that could be done with the clay they sell. Its a bit different from the one I buy. So I took a little clay and made a thin paste, then smoothed over dd's hair. Didnt saturate her hair or anything just a thin rub. And wowzer. Her curls which are already nice got even more defined and the curl tightened all the way to the root. Just the little I put might have been to much for her tiny head though. The next day her scalp was a little dry on the top of her head. :shrug I think tonight ill try the recipe on the site. Im needing to remove some build up from my bronners that I used the other day. Baking soda and vinegar did an ok job. But if all holds true so far, im sure the clay will do the trick. Im hoping to get a good routine down with the clay, bronners, and california baby that I use. I love all three but I know it could look much nicer from what I saw it do for dd's hair that day if I could get the right routine for my hair. Maybe be able to not use the bronners since clay is suppose to be good as a shampoo too.

MRSA is an antibiotic resistant staff infection that has to be treated very carefully because it is typically recurrent and systemic.

me 04-16-2008 09:31 PM

Re: Bentonite Clay

If you speak with Carol at livingclay that I referred to earlier she has more info on the recent studies being done on its effect on autism.
Personally speaking. Since it removes things like metals, and viruses it is very effective at absorbing and eventually removing toxins that are commonly found in children with asd. Specifically, for our nickel allergy it is amazing! We can now eat beans cooked in a metal pan. And I can eat with metal untensils sparingly. Havent been brave enough to totally ditch the plastic. I have the allergy but it does such a good job clearing it away so fast that I dont get the reaction.
And for my son. Im not sure if it is coincidence or timing or a combination of things but he has made a major jump in his preschool lessons that we do at home.
My undiagnosed(by choice) children are high functioning. I havent noticed to much difference as far as schooling with my 6yr old (maybe with her mathmatics but not certain). My son who is 4 didnt want anything to do with tracing before. He use to want to stick with answers that involved drawing a line to the correct one, and things that required circling the right answer. Now he traces numbers and the alphabet. He seems like he can settle himself better to concentrate on those things that require smaller movement. He could always do it before but only with things that highly interested him. Like untying tiny knots or making tiny markings for the picture he was drawing. Its hard to explain but since I homeschool them I noticed how it was overnight that he just started doing it. Kind of like, a child who says the alphabet one at a time and refuses to sing the whole song. Then one day starts singing it backwards. Makes you wonder what clicked in their head that caused the sudden shift.
I didnt put this as one of my uses because I didnt purchase it for this reason and it is speculative. But since you asked. :) And not only might the detoxing of metal be the difference but there is also the fact that it clears the bowels out. I have read that some children with autism are found to have toxins in the gut from vaccinations. If it can clean out metals, chemicals, parasites, and pathogenic viruses, theres no telling what else it gets out.
"Bentonite can absorb pathogenic viruses, aflatoxin (a mold), and pesticides and herbicides including Paraquat and Roundup. The clay is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces."
Source:
The Canadian Journal of Microbiology (31 [1985], 50-53)
Sound like a thorough cleaning to me though.

I wish I knew more about MRSA and how it originates in the body. However, since its safe to say it is an infection. The gastrointestinal tract is a huge part of the immune system. It would certainly help his body fight an infection. But thats all I could logically say.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9684259
Based on the above, I would think that the cleansing properties of clay would take what probiotics do a step even further. Rather than just supplement the gut with what it is lacking. Why not cleanse it so that the appropriate nutrients can be utilized and begin to maintain its own God given balance rather than supplementing to achieve a balance that cant be subscribed to an exact amount for that particular person.
Not saying probiotics are a bad thing. We have taken them here and will take them.

Ok, I was going to pm you about this me, but I thought I would just put it here. I have some things that I'd like to try using it for but not sure if it will work for these things and I don't know how to use it in some of these things:
Ears-my ears itch! I've heard maybe parasites? Would that help? Would I just take it internally?
My ds's skin-when we go somewhere and he gets spots from being around/touching an allergen (presumably dairy), would I just put some of the clay on the spots?
My dh's toenails-my dh has really disgusting yellow toenails, could he put some on them?
Are there directions for how much to take internally? Like for my ds? I know I have more, but that's all I can think of for now. Sorry to be obnoxious. :O

:giggle I dont think its obnoxious  :heart
And yes to all the above.
Your ears you can take it internally and if its parasites it will clear it up faster if you take the detox amount rather than the cleanse amount.
My eczema on my face sometimes goes into my ears. I put the clay all over my face and on my ears. Not inside the canal or anything but just like I would with soap if I was washing my face/ears.
And your sons contact dermatitis would be soothed by either way you apply it. My dd had it as a diaper rash and I just applied it like a very thin watery talc. Cleared it right up. My son got it around his mouth and I just rubbed some on like a dry talc and that also worked. When I got the dermatitis that leaves red rings I actually use it as a thick paste, let it dry, then rinse off. But for light irritation like you would see similar to a bug bite you dont need a paste, just calamine lotion consistency.
And for your dh's nails. A while back I started a thread about my dh's nails. I would swab apple cider vinegar on his nails at night and let them dry. It worked really good but I bet you could make a paste with the clay and acv and get even better results! :)
Eta:you should probably ask the place where you get yours from about the amounts. I dont know if it is a general ratio for all bentonite clay or not. I just know about the particular one I use.

A very easy way to cleanse your liver is lemon water. Fresh squeezed lemon juice - best to take at least 24 ounces on an empty stomach :) :) :)

NOt saying that clay wouldn't be great too but lemon juice draws toxins out of the liver.

So, like squeeze one whole lemon into 24 ounces of water? It that right? That seems easy.

Also, when I did the mask on my face I covered my scar with it. As it tightened it began to hurt really bad. I probably washed it off a bit too early because of that. I'm wondering why it hurt. Refresher...I had skin cancer removed and have a scar from the middle of my nose (between the nostrils) down through my lip. It didn't necessarily hurt like bad hurt, it could've been drawing out toxins from the surgery and tightening the skin...which if I can handle it, it could be a good way of getting rid of the scar. I just wondered if any other clay users had any knowledge on this.

A new thing I found is it is completely/mentally unnoticeable in cocoa. :)
My daughter has been able to start detecting when it is or isnt in her smoothie. Which I find really interesting that she can do. But she is a super texture detector (sensory issues).

I did notice that the book that lists the liver also lists moles and scars :shrug I just might have to get that book sooner than I had planned. Im curious too if anyone knows more about this :popcorn

:yes we get itchy ears with our allergies sometimes and we use NutriBiotic ear drops with grapefruit seed and .5% tea tree oil. Its kind of pricey but it only takes once for us and the itches dont return unless we have a seperat allergy flare. :shrug

Amster..I wish I knew more about clay or anything else for that matter that could help him :hugheart

Righteous mama-Im pretty sure my liver is working over time with the prenatal probs I always have. Would it be ok for me to do that? So long as im taking the clay I have no problem with pulling out toxins because the clay will quickly absorb it and remove it. But is there any harm for me to take that much lemon for any reason I might not know of? I have been craving homemade limeade lady crazy :think

Eta: It was MamaLovesDaddy who mentioned it. Perhaps she could be persuaded by pm to share with us :)

:yes and the more the better. When Luke's liver numbers (it wasn't enzymes but something else) were high, we substituted all his water for lemon water and pushed it HARD. Within 2 weeks, his numbers were normal :tu I would drink all my water with lemon in it for a week or two :) But be sure to do 24 ounces in the on an empty stomach at least once a day.

Well I could always capsule it myself.

Thanks me! I'm going to try that as soon as I get it (btw, I ordered from that earthslivingclay too). I know the toenail thing bugs my dh so he'll be willing to try it. :yes
And thanks cobluegirl for the tto suggestion, I'm going to try that today! I remember you had a post about itchy ears awhile back (right?). I also wonder if we might have a yeast problem. :think
This thread is fun. :giggle There are all these wonderful suggestions all coming together. :heart
