Things to give to firm up poop?
 

I've decided it really is not time for my lab to be euthanised. Just need to feed her something different I guess.

I cooked her rice this morning and added it to her food tonight.

She just gets runny poop off and on and if I'm not home (or wake up at night) she'll poop inside.

I took her off of Taste of the Wild, was told that grain free is not good for old dogs. Bought Canidae and she did better. I went to a different store and they didn't have it so I bought Diamond last time. Seemed okay, she's been on it for several weeks, but now the runs again.

I just need to keep her confined when I am not home and when I am sleeping. And feed her rice I guess.

Any ideas?

This website says canned pumpkin. I did give her canned pumpkin til we used it up. The person at the upscale petstore told me that. I will get more next week.

It also said canned dog food was gentler on their stomach. I've never heard this.

We're having to feed a special diet to two of our cats who are ill. Arthur has runny poops, too. Yes, the pumpkin is a pretty common thing to ad to a dog or cat's food as a fibre source. :yes It doesn't have to be canned, although that is convenient. I baked a pumpkin from our garden and froze it in little portioned, pureed blobs. Unfortunately, Arthur won't touch it; won't eat rice either. The dog we had before this one loved the puree, though. He also liked pumpkin muffins. Canned food is easier to digest because it's sort of like a puree (less work for the digestive system breaking it down) and there's more water in it. You can get tinned foods that have added fibre, too. I will never feed a high-protein (grain-free) food exclusively ever again; it's what sent Mackenzie into renal failure. He's doing sooo well now on a food that whose ingredient list would make a lot of people here cringe. I don't really care; results are results. Arthur, because of his condition, is grain-free still, though there's rice in his and it's not super-high protein. The canned fibre formula is too much for his system; one feeding firms his stools for three days. Effective stuff.

:hugheart I was also going to suggest the canned pumpkin. A few years ago we had some foster kittens with the runs and there was a shortage of canned pumpkin. I could not find it in any store. So, I cooked a pumpkin for the kittens. The rice is good and I sometimes give my dogs or cat or kittens rice cooked in homemade chicken stock with some home cooked chicken. I spoil them. Now the dog comes in the kitchen whenever I cook chicken because he thinks I am making his dinner.
Have you taken her to the vet to see if she has anything that needs medication?

Yeah, find out from the vet what's causing it. It may be a parasite or infection that you can treat.

You can also train her to use puppy pads or other acceptable, disposable material, when she can't go out. It's just management, but it would make your life easier.

I'm going to add pumpkin to her food. Adding rice right now.

I might take her to the vet. She's just old. 14 yrs 2 mo. I want to try these things first.

She had formed poop last night at 11pm and again this morning. So maybe the rice is working.

At her age it's all about keeping her comfy in her last months.

Wonder if I could try canned food too, but I think the pumpkin will be cheaper. Thankfully she will eat anything.
