I did about for about three months after my microwave broke. And...now I have a new microwave! It wasn't for us.

Good luck~

I'm a bit too dependent on mine.

I'm very dependent on mine! To store my storage dishes!

I almost never use mine, except as a cat-proof breadbox. Came with the rental house. :giggle

What do you use yours for most? We used to live out of the thing when we were first married, but weaned off it.

Re: okay, let's go microwave-free

I went a year+ w/out one after mine broke. The only reason we have one now is that it came w/ the house (it's an above the stove kind). DH uses it more than I do, but I do use it now because it's there. :shrug

The main thing I use mine for is re-heating food & heating a cup of water for tea or hot chocolate. . Once in a great while I'll thaw meat in there, but it's rare that I do that. You just need to plan ahead to re-heat things. Having a toaster oven helps. :yes And having a tea pot is a necessity w/out a microwave.

Re: okay, let's go microwave-free

I gave my microwave away to my sister about two months ago. I rarely used it before that...and only to reheat leftovers. I read in another microwave thread that a toaster oven works much better to reheat food and the food tastes better too. I looked up toaster ovens to buy to replace my microwave, and I found some that can fit two pizza pans. My oven is tiny so I decided it counted as a toaster oven. I've been putting leftovers on a cookie sheet or oven-proof pan, setting it in the oven and turning the oven to preheat to 350. As soon as the light goes off telling me the oven has reached 350, my food is warm but not charred :giggle Sometimes I have to cut big chunks of meat into smaller pieces to heat it to the middle, but so far I haven't missed my microwave at all. I steam vegetables on the stovetop, now too. I can't think what else people use microwaves for, that's all I ever did with mine.

:lol

The toaster oven helped me to reheat w/out having to turn on the oven for just a bowl of spaghetti (or whatever I was heating up for myself or DH) If I was re-heating for the whole family I did it in the oven or on the stove top. The only thing w/ the stove top is that you have to stand right there & make sure not to burn it. That was hard for me, so I used the toaster oven or oven more often. It just takes a bit longer. :)

We've never had one since getting married. My parents have one so I grew up with one. I've never missed having one :shrug3

Will be back. On my phone right now :shifty

I don't use mine. My toaster oven does everything for me. I think I need to clean it soon though. :shifty

Re: okay, let's go microwave-free

When I lived with my parents I used the microwave to reheat food and to heat tea water. Now we have a tea kettle for heating water and I could not live without my toaster oven for reheating plates of food. A frying pan works well for reheating rice dishes. Just add a bit of water and the rice isn't dry from the fridge any longer :no Soups get reheated in a pot...

Um... butter gets melted in a teeny tiny pot on the stove.

I can't think of anything else that I used to use the microwave for though... we thaw frozen meat for about 3 hours in the oven with just the light on or in a ziploc bag in warm water in the sink if we need it thawed quickly (otherwise we thaw it in the fridge over several days). I've never used a microwave to thaw meat although I've seen my parents and friends do so.

Re: okay, let's go microwave-free

We haven't had a microwave for a few years. I don't really miss it. I use a tea kettle for heating water for tea, I melt butter in a small pan like BB, and I re-heat foods in a pan on the stove or in the oven, depending on the food. The only thing I notice any inconvenience about is making popcorn. It's a little harder on the stove, although a popcorn maker or those pre-packaged popcorn baskets made to shake over a burner would solve most of that problem.
