Re: Learning to Read

I have a question - Which of these books do you think would be the best for a 6.5 year old who is just learning to read long vowel words (she knows how to read most sight words and short vowel words) AND an emerging 4 year old who is interested in learning but barely knows the names of the alphabet?? I would like to instruct both... but thinking I may not be able to do both at once do the the different levels...Anyway here is what I was considering...

- - The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching
-- 100 Easy Lessons
--- Reading Made Easy

Or? Right now I have an Abeka curriculum and MFW, but both seem teacher intensive... looking for an easier method with 2.

Bumping this thread because I was lurking in here and saw that the most recent post didn't get any responses. Wish I could help!

No one has posted on here in ages. Are there any new awesome resources out there? What about those Explode the Code workbooks I see everywhere. Are they any good?

Explode the code is a great resource. My oldest is finishing the last book now. The second is almost halfway thorough and my youngest is starting soon. We are also using the reading lesson book with A and she just loves it. She also enjoys a healthy does of Bob books.

Supplements for us are, phonics pathways, the free reading program, starfall reading, and reading eggs.

My opinion on reading is that it's a vital skill. I want them to have a solid base but have lots and lots of fun in the process. A lot of kids are turned off from being readers if the process is boring or too frustrating.
