post-antibiotic therapy

Help! I know this will likely not be a quick fix. I finished a two week course of 875 mg of Amp-clav this past Tuesday. It was a tough 2 weeks. I took probiotics throughout but still had cramping and stomach upset. Since finishing I have heartburn when I lay down to go to bed. I have tried elevating the my head but it usually requires me to get up and take a drink of water and then stay up for a while. I eat an early (4ish) supper and haven't had anything to eat after that. I have been researching prebiotics as I am thinking I need to feed the good bacteria that I am supplementing. Also, I will eliminate milk....which is going to be hard as I do like lattes! Anyway, I have to have surgery on Tuesday as the antibiotics didn't do what they were supposed to. I am terrified of having this unresolved and being hit again with more antibiotics. I know there are fermented foods that could help...but living in a smaller town they aren't very easy to find....Would love some ideas to protect and heal.....or even some personal experience stories. I have NEVER had heartburn before.

I'm not sure, but it's possible the heartburn is related to something else. I would continue taking probiotics, but it might just take time for everything to get back to normal. :hug2

When N was on antibotics we used S.boulardii, which is sort of like a probiotic but actually a yeast so it doesn't get killed off by the abx. The Florastor kind we used was particularly supposed to help with digestive issues.

Things like clay and slippery elm and pectin can be healing and soothing to digestive tract. Kefir or yogurt from grass fed milk is actually a helpful dairy

Re: post-antibiotic therapy

Heartburn can absolutely be gut dysbiosis.

The reading I'm doing right now would encourage you to NOT take probiotics or ferments but instead to take prebiotics. The probiotic strains in supplements are strains that should be in the large intestine, not the small intestine. This includes most ferments.

Inulin is an inexpensive prebiotic. Larch extract is another but it costs more.
