Dish towels and dish rags

How often do you replace your dish towels and dish rags? How often do you wash them?
Do you leave them out hanging or draped over the middle of the sink or put them elsewhere?

I try to replace them every day. I'll throw the used ones in the laundry room at the end of the day and pull out new ones. The old ones get washed whenever I do laundry.

I leave them hanging on the oven handle.

I replace them every day- I throw them on the edge of the utility sink in the laundry room to dry and then put them in with my next load of whites.

Daily. All the microfiber clothes used for cleaning and dishes and the shower curtain get their own double wash load, plus the odd really dirty item of clothing.

I replace mine daily - or, if I've done a particularly greasy/yucky sink of dishes, a couple of times a day. I knit and crochet them, MIL knits them for me, so I have plenty to use.

I drape them over the sink handle when not in use, and once they are dirty, I have a dedicated small dishcloth hamper in my kitchen.

I get squicked out by washing things for my dishes in the same load as things for my bum, so...separate loads it is :shifty

For replace - I meant toss them in the rag pile and purchase replacements.
For wash - I meant like daily.

Re: Dish towels and dish rags

I use a clean washcloth for each load of dishes, so 3 a day typically. I usually hang it over the sink faucet to dry before putting it in the laundry basket, but sometimes will drape the wet cloth over the laundry hamper to dry.

Dish towels & the hand towel in the bathroom get changed out daily.

When I first read this, I thought you meant 'replace' as throwing out & buying new ones, so I replied with 'mine seem to last forever.' (I even have some dish towels from my wedding 18 years ago.)

Before posting, I read the other replies & realized you meant change out with clean ones. In that context, my reply sounded really, really gross. LOL.

ETA: Cross posted. We were thinking the same thing!

For replace, then...I toss them into the rag pile when they get holes in them, and pull some more out of the new-and-waiting knit pile :grin

I downgrade to rags when they are stained, thinning, holey or the she's are going ragged. I run a load of kitchen linnens once or twice a week. Heavy wash hot.

Do you knit towels or just washcloths? What kind of yarn do you use? Can you post a photo of some?

Re: Dish towels and dish rags

I use basic kitchen cotton (Peaches and Cream, Bernat, whatever I can find) for my washcloths.
The kitchen towels I knit or crochet, to dry hands with, but I use bar rags for drying dishes.
Here are some Tunisian spa cloths I crocheted - this is essentially how I crochet dishcloths, too, except these are with a cotton/linen blend:

The dishcloths that I knit are just a basic pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...thers-favorite

I downgrade them to rags when I buy new ones. I used to use them for years. My mom would buy new ones for me after seeing how nasty mine looked. I'm trying to be better about buying new ones regularly. I think I used my last set for a year before buying new.

Re: Dish towels and dish rags

I have a clothes line that hangs over the sink. Dish cloths get used for one day hung lon the line between uses. When dry they go in to the dirty clothes.

Dish towls some times get used for two days, if they miraculously only get used for drying clean hands/dishes. But they rarely last a full day because they get grabed for minor kitchen cleaning. If damp they get hung on the clothes line as the dish cloths.

I replace them when thry are falling apart.

I also prefer thin dish cloths so I don't knit them my self.

Re: Dish towels and dish rags

I bought ikea baby washcloths for all my cleaning. It's been just about a year and I haven't bought new ones but I should soon. The ones I use for dishes are in great shape though.

I have a bucket in the kitchen for all used cloths and I wash them once or twice a week separately. I use a new cloth for dishes usually daily. I can't handle the "draped over the handle" thing even though that's how I was raised.

Re: Dish towels and dish rags

I think we use 3-4 kitchen towels daily. We scratch-cook a lot, so our kitchen is heavily used. I keep a bin in the kitchen for used towels and wipes (we use cut up old clothes as napkins unless we have company.) I wash towels and rags twice weekly.
