Literature-based language arts for 3rd grade
Does something like this exist? I want classic books to read but things like spelling lists, grammar lessons, etc, that are taken from the classic books.

Re: Literature-based language arts for 3rd grade
There is actually a curriculum called "learning language arts through literature"
LLATL is what people often call it ;) http://commonsensepress.com/scope/scope3.htm |
Re: Literature-based language arts for 3rd grade
Jodi, have you used LLATL? :) And, if you have, what did you think?

Re: Literature-based language arts for 3rd grade
We use this for our spelling words. DD reacts better to spelling words that come from her reading and it feels like it is a double tap for the reinforcement of said words. :yes:rockon

First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind Level 3 has famous poems worked into the lessons. Don't know what grade it's supposed to be for but my 2nd grader loves it. The grammar is done with standard sentences (diagram "Furry cats sit.") but you repeat a poem together 3 times each lesson and work towards the child memorizing it.

Sonlight does this exactly. That's one of the (many) reasons we use it as a whole curriculum

Re: Literature-based language arts for 3rd grade
I used LLATL for (I think) two years back when DD(15) was younger. It takes classic books and ties grammar, spelling(?), writing, narration, and dictation into the lessons. I liked it...can't remember why I stopped using it. That may have been when I switched to Sonlight? However, I did not like Sonlight Language Arts (which I have *heard* they've since changed). I remember LLATL being a good program and I would definitely consider using it again. :-) At the time, I may have opted for something else, for the simple reason that we might have already read a few of the books for the particular level I was set to use next? I know there are samples online at the link SonshineMama posted. :D
